02 Tacoma, fixed with curse words.

I would expect someone that cut a perfectly good Tacoma to shreds and learned how to weld by building the chassis to have the testicular fortitude to say F it and drive this beast on the street..... Guess not :luvya:

He said 1st gen tundra and 2nd gen TACOMA...not Tundra.

First gen tundras are 7100 for 2wd, 6700 for 4wd.
Keep in mind GCWR is a pathetic 11,800. Curb weight of a DC is 5300 for 2wd, 5700 for 4wd. Assuming you buy a first gen tundra DC 4x4, you're realistic tow figures without exceeding GCWR is 6100 lbs. That said...can it tow 8000 lbs up the sierra nevadas? Yes. Is it sketchy as fuck? Also yes.

I know he meant 2nd gen tundra. So did i when i said 10,100 capacity.

I was saying that a 2nd gen tacoma can tow just a truck filled with gear and be okay. So a 1st gen tundra can too. I say that because my dad has towed me multiple times now. And its never been sketchy for us going up and down mountains. Just expensive for gas.

a 2nd gen tundra would be a better choice, but Jon probably can't afford that. And a cummings would be even better. I was stating a 1st gen tundra is probably cheaper and will work as a DD as well as a basic tow rig till a later date.

I meant 2nd Gen Tacoma :p I was comparing the 2. I'm just saying a 1st Gen tundra only being slightly bigger than the 2nd Gen Tacoma will not be enough to haul a full blown race truck on 40s, with tools, spares, Jon, camping shit, his son and there other stuff. My Tacoma couldn't handle it in hilly terrain. And when I added another person I immediately sold the truck in fear of my life and everyone around me. The trailer would over power the truck like it wasn't there. I was going down hill one time and it was raining... Some ass hat cut me off and I hit my brakes and it did zero, I just slid... Abs immediately came on and I was barely touching the brakes. I couldn't get over or anything. I thought I was gonna crash right into him and I kept down hill with basically zero brakes... Speed INCREASING as I went down... The dude just kept same speed as me I tailgated him forever until I swerved over when I had the chance.... Worst experience in my life. :(:(

Well yea it won't do a fully out fitted trailer...but come on. At this rate. The whole first year jon has this thing moving will be all engine and shock tuning. So he won't need spare everything...hopefully. So just the truck itself. It'll be fine.

Then after that he can tell the small tundra and get something bigger and a bigger trailer.

Im talking basic car trailer to just get the rig there. Thats it.

And you're trailer must have sucked ass. Does it have trailer brakes? because seriously, we have hauled my truck that is full of gear and packed with 500lbs of mud. Plus my dads truck loaded and us in it. And it does just fine. Goes 65mph no problem and slows down just fine. Never had a bad experience.

Of course we load and balance it right and have a tongue tension bar ball mount.

Sounds like user error to me :luvya:

I still think Eric is a morron :p never had a bad experience in The FRV. Hell it even did 6000lbs of concrete on the same trailer and towed it offroad. One hill climb almost killed it but that hill puts the hurt on any truck at all its so steep.

So idk wtf Eric is talking about. FRV with 34'' tires NOT regear towed this..

And that was DOWN a mountain pass..0 problems. Tranny got a bit hot but that was it.

So i think a 1st gen tundra would be fine to start with.

    Yea.

I don't see how that has to do with going down hill though. Where Eric claims its not good...

And a 1st gen tundra has a V8. so it better right off the bat.

Im not defending a 2nd gen tacoma. Im defending a 1st gen tundra. 2nd gen tacoma would be a horrible idea. Did you not like your 1st gen tundra?

yea, i know. Thats what im saying. Eric said it was horrible, but i bet his trailer doesn't have brakes. Or the tongue.

With that and a 1st gen tundra i don't see how it would be a bad starter tow rig/DD for a while.

Not like he is gonna use it to tow for years anyways..lol

For the cost of a 1st gen tundra I think an older 7.3 Ford (97-03) would be best. That or a 6.0 gas chevy.

It did have trailer brakes. Fully loaded I was 6500# extra over the weight of my stock Tacoma. (4800#). It's just too light. Uphill it did it.. Did NOT like it lol, but it did it. It sucked in snowy conditions too because it was so light. Engine isn't an issue (power) it's braking and controlling the vehicle. I had it perfectly balanced on my trailer... 600# tongue weight... Perfect. Still sketchy at times.

weird. I know Frank was close to 6000 when he towed me back from Lolo. And the trailer is 2000. But FRV is 6000+ alone so..idk.

I still think a 1st gen tundra wouldn't be bad if you found one cheap.

If your goal to catch the tow rig, trailer, and towed truck on fire...then yes. Awesome choice.

I loved my first gen tundra. It was not by any means a good tow pig. It was like being a "c" student in high school, but with a big dick. Fun most the time, but borderline acceptable when it counted.

Ok makes more sense now, couldn't tell if that was sarcasm or not. Either way for the money if I was to buy another truck to tow my Tacoma around it wouldn't be another Toyota. Not that it wouldn't do the job but if I'm spending ~10k on a truck I'd like to get the best out of it. Hell even in that price range older Duramax's come up for sale from time to time around here.

Yea thats what i figured. Probably was okay to tow just the truck.

With a bunch of spare 40'' tires and tools and parts and more...probably not.

Yeah Toyota's are such pieces of shit when it comes to towing <sarcastic font>
