Yeah, no kidding. The disk portion it completely separated from the mount. Not only that, one ball joint and both u-joints on the front axle are shot. And by shot, I mean there are no needle bearings left in either one. They're just floating in there.

Wow those rotors are crazy, did you test drive it i'm curious how it felt. Back when i got my Yj (i was 18) the jeep had a low speed clanging noise, i looked at the axle shafts and wiggled them around and the u-joints were completely shot and rusted out probibly like the one you have there. Had a shop change them for 400 bucks LOL. 2Yrs after that i could change a u-joint on one of those in less than 10mins on the side of the trail lol.

Sweet tires on the 1st gen, those AT's kick ass in the snow.

You should keep that Heep rotor for public service announcements on the need to check your brakes and do maintenance on your Heep.

Can't catch a break. Radiator went kaput Friday. Yesterday I changed the oil in the rear diff and trans, only to find a ball bearing sitting on the magnetic drain plug. Based on some forum threads I thought it was an input bearing issue, but it seemed too small to be that and the local guy that does transmissions/diffs agreed, more like a detent.

What's driving me nuts though, is that it seems basically everything online is telling me I have an L-50 transmission, but the ID plate in the engine bay clearly says L-52. :goingcrazy:

Gonna try cranking out some real progress this evening on the Tacoma. Honestly kinda nervous about trying to get the aluminum portion of the firewall together because I still for the life of me can't TIG weld a decent T joint. I can't get the arc to stop jumping to the closest of the two pieces. :frusty:

If that came out of the t-case that looks like the detent ball.

Jon, don't know if it could affect you're truck, but I remember the early 5sp's had a defective front countershaft bearing, (83 and earlier). My 83 trans went thru lots of abuse before it shit the bed at just over 100k, had to replace the trans. When I pulled the old trans, there was only 4 balls left in the front countershaft bearing. I don't remember how big they were, but that might be a place to look if it relates to your trans?

To a W56? I thought about that, until I found out that I would have to relocate the crossmember and change the length of the driveshafts.

However, the L-50 and L-52 are both 5-speed

Wish I could find a decent diagram, but I'll have to take a closer look when I get a chance. At the very least, I'll get a new shifter seat and socket while I'm in there. Quite honestly I've noticed a huge improvement after changing the fluids which looked like they hadn't been done in forever.

Pretty much. It already did that to my long-standing thoughts/feelings towards Honda.

The shift detent balls are .31. The rest of the ball bearings that hold stuff in should be .24, this is based off a gear drive tcase. If it came out the trans who knows WTF it could be, however its not a detent ball lol.

    Well... shit.

The majority of relevant threads I can find point to the input bearing being a common problem with these particular transmissions.
