I want to buy a new 2017 manual transmission Tacoma. I've narrowed it to the TRD Sport or the SR (I need a 6' bed so those are the choices).
Could someone please tell me whether they are disappointed in their 4 cyl SR? I now own a 6 cyl 1999 Tacoma, and like its performance. I don't tow heavy loads, so the towing is not a deal-breaker. I do live on a fairly steep hill, and have winter driving.
    Thanks

You can get an off road with a 6 ft bed now

I have a 2nd gen, so cant speak to a 3rd gen. The 4cyl is perfect for my needs. Dont do any towing. Speed limits around me are 35-45, so performance is not an issue. I have not yet once said to myself "I need this to be faster", but again, Im not a teenager needing an ego boost trying to street race in a truck. Paid a lot less than a v6, and getting way better gas mileage...not to mention the reliability of the 2TR. Couldn't be happier

I have a 2nd gen 2.7 5 speed. It's a good truck if you need a extended cab and 4x4 it might be a heavy combination for the motor. I'd still stick with the proven 2.7 instead of the new motor some people whine about. I haven't driven one with a 3.5 so I really have no input on it other than it's a new design.

Like others I have the 2nd gen, 2015 2TR so cant speak on the 3rd gen aside from the engine. I have zero regrets over not getting the 6cyl. For everything I do its perfect. Being a manual it can go pretty quick when you want it to and plows through 2ft of snow like nothing. Full torque is at 3,800 rpms on the 2.7 vs 4,600 on the v6. So that helps in certain scenarios.

Also I just did a trip the other day staying around 90-105km the whole way and got 9.5L/100km (25 us mpg), everyday driving I consistently get 10-10.8 L/100km (11-12 L/100 in winter with dedicated snow tires)

If you regulary tow then a V6 might be beneficial

I love mine but after the mods I did. At first I thought I messed up but only cuz I came from a sports car to a 4 banger taco. With the header, exhaust, and dry air filter I'm happy with the performance.

I have a 2017 sr access cab manual, love the power once it gets above 25k, but the thing lacks any sort of torque below that. I'm installing an LCE header soon w/ exhaust and sure the extra bit of power will satisfy my needs. I raced a 2nd get v6 access cab auto about a month ago and he couldn't keep up with me though:bananadance:.

    I call BS. A 2.7 manual isn't quicker than a 4.0 auto.

    Miles, or RPM?

I think redline is around 6K RPM.

Guessing he meant 2500 RPM. (and I would agree)

I have a 2016 SR 2.7L 5 speed, and love it. I don't tow anything (yet), so I can't comment on that. I drive into the mountains in Colorado a lot, and haven't had any trouble either in snow or on steep roads. Yeah, you'll have to downshift, but that's all part of the fun, right?
