The 5 lug is just too low for me. I like the stance of the prerunner.

Regeared 4-cyl manual would probably decrease mpgs. The 5-spd manual's ratios are similar to the 5-spd auto in the V6, and those ratios are done very well IMO.

Are you looking at new or used trucks? Toyota stopped making manual PreRunners from 2011 onward, I think.

Have you ever tried one? They don't brapppp but they get the job done and 22-23 mpg ain't bad especially with lift and tires.

Well that sucks! I was thinking used, but only a couple years old. I may have to consider an older model, or going with an auto. Don't get me wrong, auto is ok, but manual is so much more fun to drive!

I honestly think that it doesn't matter that much, i would probably take a v6 with an auto, despite the lesser efficiency, because an auto will be sooo much nicer in traffic, and a v6 would be nice for getting going up that occasional stupid hill you might get stuck stopping on. BUT for best efficiency overall, i would think a 2.7L manual. I wouldn't mess with gearing if you don't plan to run bigger tires, because they are pretty much geared stock to be the best it can be on the road. Plus, it would take you a long time to for new gears to pay for themselves. Probably more than it would be worth.

If was looking at an AC or larger I would have went with the 6cyl,

Now that I have my R/C I am loving the fact I have a 4, and the reliability and durability of the 4cyl paired with the 5-spd.

    Good luck with the decision,

Nothing wrong with a 2010 truck. Last year of production at the Fremont, Calif plant.

I think now a days the autos can be more fuel efficient but it all depends on the driver. I wouldn't buy an auto 4cyl because I think it would lack too much

I tend to agree with this. Most salesmen tell me the same thing although I don't consider most of them very knowledgeable. For me the manual is just more engaging. For me, driving is still fun and not merely a means to get from point A to point B. I'm sure many here would agree.

I'm still just wondering if a regeard 4cyl 2wd would get that little extra pep without dropping mpg's down to what the 6 gets. I think for my purposes it would work great.

    We're are talking epa 19-I4 vs 17-V6.

So you are hoping that regearing will only get you to 18 city?

Forget the regear and get the V6, or get the 5-lug I4 stick if you really care about your mpg.

I wouldn't even bother with a regear I'm on oversized tires (recommends 245s I have 265s) and am 4x4 and I find it has enough pep while still getting 22-23mpg. Installing my lift now, had 2inch spacers in the front so we will see if I lose or gain any mpg soon, I don't expect to lose too much

The auto's ONLY match the manuals when the torque converter is locked on the (flat, not hill climbing) highway. The manuals are more efficient everywhere else.

The only point where the auto may exceed the fuel efficiency of the manual is because their overdrive gear ratio is higher than the manual. Depending, of course, on the torque converter being locked and the highway being pretty flat and straight.

    EPA does not equal reality.
EPA is just a branch of the US government, and I'm sure you know just how honest they can be.... Do the words "unintended acceleration" bring anything to mind?
