This thread and exchange is getting some sidebars and loss of understanding of the levels of traction control... Let me try and visualize it to help. This is for 2009 and newer Tacomas:

    2WD

    1) TRAC in 2WD (standard mode at startup): Limited slip using ABS, with engine regulation. Light traction control.

    2) Quick Press of VSC button: AUTO LSD ON/TRAC OFF: Limited slip but no engine regulation, ie. strong traction control. Helps to get unstuck if 1 tire is spinning. VSC is off under 30 mph.

    3) Stop moving, press and hold down VSC button until light comes on: VSC OFF/TRAC OFF: No traction control, no limited slip.

    4WD-HIGH:

    1) TRAC (standard mode at start up), 2009-2011: Limited slip with no engine regulation/ strong traction control. 2012+: Limited slip with engine regulation/ light traction control.

    2) 2012+ Quick Press of VSC button: TRAC OFF: Limited slip with no engine regulation/ strong traction control.

    3) Stop moving, press and hold down VSC button until light comes on: VSC OFF/TRAC OFF: No traction control, no limited slip.

    4WD-LOW:

    1) Standard Mode is no traction control/ no limited slip.

    2) A-TRAC Button pressed (Off Road TRD only): Near locker-like traction control on front and rear tires. Works anytime sensors detect tire spin/ traction loss. Matches rotation on each side of axle using ABS.

    3) Rear Locker on (Off Road TRD only): Locks rear axle, suggested for emergency only and not over 5 mph as steering is affected. ABS is disabled.

    4) Rear Locker + A-TRAC (Off Road TRD only): Locks rear axle + A-TRAC on the front axle, but only when vehicle speed drops below 3 mph.

If you don't draw blood, you're doing it wrong!
Thanks for the detailed explanation David. There's also the diagrams/flow-charts on Page 1 as well.

Yes, I saw that... from my Photobucket album, too... Happy to be of service!

Our Tacomas are such great vehicles, it is important that we all understand how to use them to their fullest potential.

But I still have Trac, VSC and Atrac. Just no buttons. Haha

I think there might be some more differences between the pre-09 and post 09 systems than we think or the naming system is slightly different. Although maybe there is even more tol it than that since 06 was when the added the VSC off button. 05's don't have one.

One example is you listed no Trac is standard mode in 4Lo. For me Trac is always on in every mode until I turn it off using one of my kill switches I wired in or I lock my rear locker.

got my switch all working. for 2 wheel drive trucks you must ground out the switch. Use a 3 pronged switch.

now off to call the bitch that ran into my parked truck :(

Yes, I should qualify that I am talking about 2009 + models only with the details. Thank you!

When I search for things, like limited slip differentials, I regularly find your excellent posts for the newer models. So far, I haven't been able to locate anything similar for the 2005-2008 years. Is there anything you can point me to?

I am trying to fully understand the LSD on my Sport, and what it can and shouldn't do. My biggest concern is that Toyota went to the electronic LSD because there was a problem with our mechanical ones. I haven't found any evidence of that anywhere yet. But if there are situations where they fail, I'd like to know so I can avoid them.

I don't know of anywhere to point you but in 09+ models the full traction control system became standard instead of optional. They already knew how to make the traction control work as an LSD so there was no point in putting a mechanical one in because it would then have two LSD in the rear and neither would probably work quite right because the two might interfere with each other.

GP3 covered them in this thread:
    http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/te...ds-vsc-trac-hac-dac-alsd-atrac-explained.html

As for the issues with mechanical limited slip (2005-2008 Sport TRD rear differentials): The LSD clutch pads will wear out someday. Brake pads are easier to change and cheaper, too.
