Yeah I understand there are differences between TRAC and A-TRAC but for my purposes it seems this mod gets you 90% of the way there minus the e-locker. And from my understanding people with the Off Road package are generally using A-TRAC and not the locker most of the time. So for me this is like TRD Off Road package lite without having to pay for it.

If I could have afforded it, I surely would have went with the OR package.

Seeing the third gen section forced me to get a Ford...
yes...05-08 OR. 09+ OR would be even better in their stock forms.

A spinning tire is wasted energy, and doesn't move the truck forward... as only when there is traction between the tire and the earth is there movement (on level or uphill ground).

TRAC limits the amount of slip so some energy can transfer to the traction tire, that otherwise does nothing.

A-TRAC and Locking differentials match tire rotation across the axle so one tire can't spin free, it will rotate with the other tire so the max. amount of driving power can be given to the tire(s) that actually move your truck.

    Levels of Tacoma traction:

    1) 2WD Open Differential and no traction control
    2) 2WD Limited Slip Diff. (incl. TRAC & AUTO LSD)
    3) 2WD Locking Diff.
    4) 4WD Open Differentials
    5) 4WD Limited Slip Rear Diff.
    6) 4WD Limited Slip Front & Rear Diff. (TRAC in H4 and Yellow Wire Mod non Off Roads in L4)
    7) 4WD Locking Rear Diff.
    8) 4WD A-TRAC
    9) 4WD Locking Front and Rear Diff. (not available from Toyota)

David K, thanks for the good info. That said, would ATRAC or TRAC be safer than locking the front and rear for things such as driving in snow?

So, ideally, one would get a 09+ TRD OR and put an ARB front locker...

That said, since I'm working on somewhat of a budget, I'm going to try to get a 05-08 TRD OR and add a front locker in the future.

x2 If you are just worried about driving in snow , just get a 4x4 SR5 .

You do not 'need' an after-market front locker if you have a '09+ Off Road 4WD... Unless, you are some serious rock crawler and want all the traction controls possible. An A-TRAC rig will go anywhere a front locker rig can go (with equal tires and body height).

A-TRAC automatically matches rotation (or 'locks') both tires per axle on the front and rear (in L4) anytime one tire begins to spin.

TRAC (in H4) limits spin on the front and rear... and if an Off Road TRD, has the hydraulic brake booster which improves the strength of the limited slip systems.

I have to say, I did this mod a few weeks ago and I love it. Not as quick to kick in as A-Trac but it works none the less. It has gotten my truck out of spots that I otherwise would have been doing the 2 wheel boogie!!!

This mod really has me interested. I am almost decided to go ahead and do it on my 2011 TRD but in the back of my mind I still wonder if there is a valid reason that Toyota did not make TRAC available in 4L. Were they just trying to add value to the OR package, or is there a real good reason that TRAC automatically turns off when switching to 4L in a truck not equipped with A-TRAC?

Also, I have read about 50 of the 240 replies to the thread and wondered if someone can spare me the other 190 and fill me in on whether a consensus was reached about which yellow wire it is. One said the top-most, others said it was the lower one down. It sounded like PIN 25 was the definitive answer but there didn't seem to be any explanation of how to identify PIN 25.
