Picked up a 3rd Gen Runner and the rear end is toast. Anyone try putting a 1st Gen Tacoma Rear End (4.10) into a 3rd Gen 4Runner (4.10)? Are they the same?

Not sure if the width is the same or not but should be sufficiently close. The biggest think you need to take into consideration is the 4Runner is a coil sprung suspension where the Tacoma is a leaf sprung suspension. So you would have to weld on the coil mounting buckets to the new axle. You're really better off location a good 3rd gen 4runner rear axle.

Front diff parts evenly swap over (Tacoma must be ADD, as they were offered in manual hub and ADD).

As for the rear if I recall correctly, I think there were some fitment issues. Non locked Tacomas have an 8.4" rear, whereas locked are 8.0".

Someone will chime in but I forget what the exact difference was in a 4R.

I've got a line on a 7.5" 4.10 but it's out of a Tacoma. Just need the differential pot, not the axle. It's got 250k + miles on it and they want $500 CAD, so I may just rebuild what I have. I'm in Eastern Canada, anyone have suggestions on gear suppliers out here. I've been getting most of my stuff through RockAuto.

Locker has smaller ring and pinion but even like that should interchange. I put 88 Supra limited slip in my 97 4runner. I had to notch housing in 3 places to get it in. It doesn't affect seal or anything like that. It worked but no real slip just grab and go. Not recommended for black ice.

I been wondering if newer Tacoma 4:30s would do same in my 2013. You shouldn't have any problems.
Why wouldn't you just swap the stumps? They should interchange.
