So i understand that 1st gen tacomas and 3rd gen 4runners use the A340F transmission. I also know that the 03-04 tacoma and 01-02 4runner use a drive by wire instead of a kick down cable for 4x4. Has anyone pulled all the parts like transmission, trans case, front diff, cvs, hubs, ext from a 01-02 4runner and used it on a 03-04 tacoma for the 4x4 swap? There are tons of 4runners around my area but literally no tacomas i could pull parts off of. Also is there any reason i could not use a manual (j shifter) trans case so i would not need to deal with tons of wiring? Thanks for the help!

No matter how you end up doing this from a 4Runner to a Tacoma is going to be a wiring project .

Your best homework is to sit down look at the wiring diagrams from your truck and what year 4Runner you plan to use .

See what you need to do to make them play well together !!

Do you swap everything over to a Tacoma Harness or to the 4Runner harness then merge that with the cab harness

I am used to doing electrical work so one can not tell it is not factory

Any project like this it makes it much easier to bring the complete donor vehicle home .

I heard the way the speedometer gear is wired up is a bit different. Otherwise it should be about the same

Ok thx for the input, is it possible to put a older say 01-02 trans with a j shifter on a 04? I am not good with very complicated wiring like that and if i can do a full manual id love it.

Ok so i did sime research and i think i figured put alot (please correct me if im wrong). I can get a transmission off of a 03-04 tacoma with the v6. Then i can also get a j shifter transfer case from a 01-02 or even late 90s tacoma and it should bolt right up to the 03-04 transmission. By doing so I eliminate all the electrical and vacuum lines that would go with a push button set up. By doing the j shifter it would save me a huge head ache since it is just unbolting old parts and putting in new ones in the same spot.
