Will the "2020" Tacoma become the 4th Gen? I sure hope they add some ponies

No, just a mid cycle refresh. Nothing big, new tail and head lights and a face lift is all I think will come. They always do it half way into its life. Maybe a year early but with competitio it’s needed.

And possibly power seats. It seems they were shown in a video, but that could be only on the limited or Pro, or part of the premium package. As much as I would like to have the height adjustment, I would much rather have my Inferno color, so I am happy with what I have.

I'm not. It makes our Inferno trucks more exclusive than the Cement color that was initially a Pro color. The guys who bought a Pro for the exclusivity of Cement were robbed when it dropped to the lower trims, but with Inferno discontinued, that means there are less Inferno Tacomas than Cement.

I imagine tcbob is going to need to hire some extra seasonal staff members when the 4th gen does drop... if the 3rd gens debut was any kind of foreshadowing...

I doubt they will do any substantial updates until 2025, I mean they literally can't keep up with production on the current tacoma, why bother updating when it sells and sells?

I'm definitely hoping for a long lasting generation as this helps us all with resale, something Tacoma owners expect with their vehicles. Slow updates and minor model changes help keep values up, look at jeep for a comparison. If the tacoma rebirth gets shorted by a few years, resale value will drop and Toyota will risk reputation. This is why I expect them to stick to the current 10 year plan, that and the fact that the literally just came out with the third gen in 2016.

I understand your thinking, but those posts were coming from someone working on the next gen Tacos and Tundras. Yeah, that user is new, but I'm giving them credit, esp for posting the day the 2020 teaser was dropped. The teaser info fixes the issues that get complained about heavily here. I don't think it was a coincidence?

I’m not sure how I feel about the 4th gen. Do I want to be like a 2nd genner and hate it, constantly trolling the 4th gen forums teasing them about the seriously toned down and extremely unaggressive styling? I feel like that demographic, those having survived eating tide pods, prefer a very neutered look. Can’t have a truck spreading micro-aggressions across the neighborhood. The 3rd gen might be the last of the “mean looking” tacomas.

Wouldn't that be funny. You get your power seats and your apple car play, but you get the ridgeline front end styling.

lol yeah they are going to break tradition to go backwards on gen cycle.

    1995-2004 MY 1st gen - 10yrs
    2005-2015 MY 2nd gen - 11 yrs
    2016-2020 MY 3rd gen - 5 yrs

yeah that just means that poster has no credible facts about a 4th gen.

toyota has been extending out gen cycles from the tacoma, 4runner, tundra, sequoia, land cruiser.

most likely the tacoma will go to minimum 10 yrs on this gen, maybe 11 or 12 yrs with mid cycle refresh in 2020 and a last push on the gen cycle in 2023/24.

the 4runner is going on 11yrs on the current gen with the next gen coming out in fall 2020 (2021 MY) which will put it at 13yrs i think on the current 5th gen.

the tundra is going on 13yrs on the current gen (2006 MY is when the current gen came out). if pushed to 2020 release (2021 MY) that would put it close to 15yrs on the current gen.

edit : forgot to add, most likely the current 4runner and tundra are going to a new TNGA frame i am guessing made for the 4runner and tundra.

i know toyota wants to move all vehicles to standard frame across the world, but i am only guessing the moving them to TNGA frame.

    Reviving a quiet thread...

I think the nature of the competition will drive current and future Tacoma reboot cycles. You can bet your last dollar the next version of the Ranger is going to be fierce competition; the current model is just a placeholder. FCA is bringing back the Dakota in the mid-size segment and that is probably going to be a strong competitor as well. Say what you will about FCA reliability, but they are innovative and their trucks sell.

Toyota is going to have to move to a Gen 4 Tacoma well before 2025 or they'll get whipped by Ford and FCA (sorry Chevy). My guess is 2022 or 2023 with a hybrid powertrain following on the heels of the 2021 Tundra.
