They are actually going for a 1.6L non-turbo, high-revving unit. It makes a shit-tonne of horsepower at 13,000RPM.

Serious question since I respect your opinion- do you think Toyota will release the 4th gen sooner than 2025?

Between the next gen Ranger, Tesla, Rivian and others hitting the market, Toyota would probably want to try and protect their market share, right?

    Anybody else care to comment?

I don’t think so. Toyota has always been extremely measured in their model renewals. It would be out of character for them to release a new Tacoma sooner.

Look at the Tundra and 4Runner for instance, and how long-in-the tooth those models are. Fellas always think there is some immediate panic to get a new model out, but after decades and decades of market ups and downs, Toyota generally does not panic. They don’t care that GM has more USB ports, and Dodge has a locker in their full size. Even in a time when an “off road” vehicle is suddenly the new yoga pants, same old 4Runner, same old Tundra.

Toyota plays the long game. I believe they will release a new Tacoma when they feel ready to do so. In my guesstimation, that will be about 10 years after the release of the 3rd Gen, so round-about 2026.

A new 4Runner and Tundra are right around the corner. They are both dinosaurs in the car world and still sell for two reasons: They are bulletproof and wear a Toyota badge.

While I agree with you, I wouldn't be surprised to see the 4th gen out maybe a little sooner. When the 2nd gen was out they had like no competition. Now they have much more and there may be a new ford ranger coming out. Even though the tacoma still sells like hot cakes.

Toyota doesn’t care about the competition, is my observation. Hence Tundra, which is like 8 years behind the competition with no end in sight.

Maybe not, but they sell a hell of a lot more tacomas than tundras.

Word is that they’ll be using a Harbor Freight Predator 212CC motor.

I don’t think it will be till after a new Tundra. One thing is for sure, Toyota doesn’t lead the pack with new power plants. Toyota just matches what’s out there and often, not even that.

I've heard the 4th gen will be powered by the ford fiesta's 1.0L 3-cly engine, but it'll have apply carplay V.385 and a heated multi-fold vibrating tailgate.

I agree, it will definitely be after the new tundra. Rumors are the new tundra will get quite a bit better mpg, possibly even better than the tacoma. If that happens, at that point why would someone purchase a tacoma? Other than its size of course.
