I'm wondering what is in the wind with a 4th generation Tacoma. Found almost nothing on TW - has there been much skuttlebutt about what the 4G might be? Less concerned with cosmetics than mechanicals. I keep fantasizing that they'll follow some of the other trends in the market but I fear the worst.

The Tacoma goes through 10 year cycles. Not gonna see a 4th gen for a while

There was some really good stuff in the 2020 MY sticky by @Carmaker1 , but his posts have been deleted. @hiPSI just pointed out that his posts are still around. Here's the good one:
The 4th Gen was supposed to drop in 2022, but the next gen Tundra delays have slid that out a year or two.

All the big details that I can remember are hybrid versions and platform commonality between the Tundra and T4R.

So will the T4R be getting larger or the Tundra smaller? I’m genuinely curious as I’m giving some thought to getting a Tundra a year or so after the next gen debuts.

Interesting. Adventure boxes - so heading more into the overlanding niche - maybe something like the Aussies do with those boxes they put on flat beds? It's clear the Tacoma is less a truck than it is a truck-shaped car for daily driving and light utility use. It isn't geared for serious work.

Sorry! I missed the Sequoia in there. In my mind, the sizes should be close to what they are now. Taco / T4R and Tundra / Sequoia siblings. I think the new LC is mixed in there as well, but the planning has changed according to some recent speculation. Lexus only for the lux, but there was supposed to be a raw Toyota LC. The newer articles that I saw have said the Toyota LC is done for the US, which sucks if the intent was to make it bad ass again.

My gut tells me that with the American Land Cruiser barge being discontinued that the 4R will grow into a more luxe SUV replacement for it. Look at the SUV space - it's either Subaru-shaped or it's big Lexus/Land Cruiser/Tahoe-shaped. No real middle ground.

Would love it if they did a poverty-pack version of the LC - cloth, minimal electronics - price it in the 60's - but Toyota wouldn't want to cut into 4Runner sales I bet.

It was supposed to happen. But I do think that market overlap probably put the nail in the coffin. Although a bit big, Toyota could use a Wrangler / Bronco competitor.

This is very true. I have four trucks in my stable and my Taco is the least ‘truck’ of all of them (this coming from a guy who owns a T100), which is not something I fully-understood prior to buying my Taco. It’s all good though and actually my Taco fills a nice niche in my life; it’ll just never replace my tow rig Silverado.

The consensus seems to think the 4th Gen Tacoma will be offered with a 4 cylinder turbo or a hybrid. That would make too much sense and probably work OK.

Toyota will ask Mike Spears (Brittany's less mentally stable step sister) to design a new Tacoma from the ground up. He will specify a completely new body (new grille, head and tail lights and move the gas filler door to the passenger side. Ditch the 2.7 4 cyl and the 3.5 V6 and replace them both with one engine option; an inline 3.0 5 cylinder with advanced VVTiii. Not only will it mimic the Atkinson cycle it will also drop cylinders to save fuel.

It will be complex and expensive to produce, but will only lose 78 hp & 100 ft/lb compared to the 3.5 but for a mere $12,000 price increase get anywhere from .3 to .9 more MPG.

Yes. From the start, he appeared to be an actual Toyota person. Engineering, planning, or marketing?

I wish we could get more info like that around here to corral the crazy stuff.

    He wrote something like
"Tacoma production was to end June 30, 2022. I'm not sure if that has changed to 00/2023."
