I had a 2011 Frontier that made it to about 150k miles and the only repair it needed was about $200. I forget the details of what went wrong since I don’t know much about cars, but it was definitely a safety-threatening issue. If only occurred at a certain rpm in a certain gear like 5th, meaning it only occurred on the freeway. The truck would just start dying and begin to violently lurch forward, and I would have to hastily get the hazard lights on and try to swerve it to the shoulder while the thing bucked like a bull and kept mini-dying. Very stressful. I think it was some sort of switch that went out and need to be replaced. Definitely wasn’t my fault, I had it maintained well, with regular services and maintenance every 5k miles

It’s gas mileage was also shit, like you said. It didn’t have an mpg reading, but my 2021 Tacoma with its 20.0mpg average feels almost twice as good. Before with my old frontier driving to and from work (~20 miles one way) was 1/4 of the tank. On the Tacoma it’s maybe 1/8th if that

The one thing I didn’t notice in my frontier was knocking though

I still feel the 2022 frontier could be a major threat to 2022+ Tacomas depending on how it’s priced. The engine is just straight superior

Not saying that it was destined for the scrap heap. Just when I handed it off. They wanted it back to preserve resale value (hah). I was supposed to turn it in at 70k, but I drove it an extra 3 months while waiting on the 21.

The replacement may be a lemon though. It makes low speed left turns like the rear differential is binding or the traction control computer thinks that it's losing traction on the left rear wheel. Overall, though I'm not impressed by it. Not by the interior, not by the exterior, not by the engine or the transmission or anything else.

Do you mean a specific first gen you were looking at was an AT? Because Toyota definitely made manual transmission first gen Tacomas. I owned one for 13 years.

@Carmaker1 totally understand if you can’t answer this but generally for something like the bronco or any new model, how do they make the prototypes that we see before it’s released? Do they actually Re tool the line and start making it or is it one off? Always been curious about this

    @DJinTN thanks for great information
I read in the 4runner forum the new t24a fts maybe in the new 4runner
Any chance that the new Tacoma engine is the same as the 4runner

Do u have any idea if Toyota has a vehicle in the works as far as a new version of the FJ or a replacement for it to compete with the Wrangler and Bronco?

Allen Park pilot plant until Tooling trial builds. Sometimes we might add them to the intended production line early on. First testers are VP or Verification Prototypes, wearing the final design. These were first built for the Bronco U725 in 2019, but we hid them and you saw M1 mules in camoflauge. X1 mules of the Bronco were the Everest bodies you saw in 2017-2018. Didn't even allow photos of VP Broncos until January 2020. The final design for the 2021 Bronco was finished in July 2018, save for smaller details added later on.

Understandable and very well stated. It's unfortunate how that happens here at times, but even worse on some other forums (for me), because things can change fluidly and it's not under your control. You are just putting it out there as a messenger, in a restricted manner and not shouting it out to the world.

Well stated, as we build our VP1 prototypes at our Allen Park pilot plant facility near our PDC in Dearborn. Tooling trials are usually the first units built on the assembly line, which is MAP in the case of Bronco and that started last year already. For Ranger it's currently Allen Park.

I personally believe that, as the Prado will be using it and at this point, both vehicles will be built in the same plant by March 2024. I want to be more careful regarding this new 4Runner info, as although the guy in Canada is telling the truth (to the best of his knowledge), maybe my Toyota source is testing me and leading me by the nose.

For all I know, the access I don't have to JP-based production info (only NA), easily means 6G 4Runner production could easily be sourced from Tahara initially next year and then Guanajuato from Jan/Feb 2024. Or maybe Toyota is very comfortable, redesigning them all at the same time onto TNGA? Q3 2023 Job 1 for Tacoma vs Q1 2024 for 4Runner at the same plant, I guess is more manageable.

In 1995, the Tacoma began production in January and was released March 1st. 3G 4Runner sourced from Japan, arrived 10 months later in January 1996, with Nov '95 Job 1.

The 6th generation Hilux factor, is what delayed Toyota from redesigning the Tacoma before MY2005, since that Hilux came out 2.5 years after the 1st Tacoma and needed a full 7 year run from 1997 to 2004. So by consequence, Toyota stretched out the Tacoma life by a few more years, doing a mini redesign in 2000 and then fully redesigned it for 2005.

It is said to be possible, Tacoma and Hilux might become one design like pre-1995. Don't take my word for it yet, as I cannot reliably comment on Hilux product planning, like US models. I had said awhile ago, that the NX 350 powertrain would be a peek into the future of the Tacoma and 4Runner. However, 1GR-FE 4.0L is still being used in the new 300-Series LC. Will Toyota retain it and 2GR for TNGA utes? Depends, as unlike the UR V8, they still are keeping the 1GR around.

They were studying that as of September 2019, which is where that rumor in February 2020 came from. A man named M.P., who is very in touch with things Lexus and a 4Runner enthusiast, told me about the 2021 Venza, 2022 Corolla Cross, 2022 Tundra, 2023 Sequoia, and 2023 4Runner per that Sep 2019 Toyota national gathering. I had an article written about this, which unfortunately spread like wildfire and was taken out of context.

This is where Toyota attendees questioned the new 2021 Mirai and were told it was the cancelled 2020 Lexus GS redesign, due for Job 1 in April 2019 originally, but suspended in late 2016 upon final design freeze and turned into an FCEV Mirai instead entering 2017. They took the interior design and put it in the new 2022 Lexus NX, which the Mirai interior is very similar to.

Anyway, he said there was no timeline on that program and further details would come later. At the time, I misinterpreted what he told me as, the 300-Series becoming a 5-seater in USA and being GR Sport like. In reality, they truly mean a less luxurious offering and hardcore offroader.

Toyota has been known to cancel slow selling models and permanently abandon them or quite take the slow route, as they did with the Lexus LC500. They cancelled the SC 430 cabrio in 2010 and two months before production ended in July 2010, initiated the LF-LC concept project at CALTY Newport in May 2010.

By Christmas 2010, they had the general design down sans Spindle Grille. In 2011, they finished designing the concept and debuted it in 2012. Production model hit showrooms in 2017, taking longer because of TNGA-L not being quite ready and being lead vehicle on it instead reusing the existing RWD platform.

A TNGA-F based new offroader wearing the Land Cruiser badge in the vein of an FJ40 or J79 replacement, is what was being referenced and could faster to develop, since TNGA-F is ready to go. I haven't heard much more since pre-COVID on it, as Akio Toyoda is known for tearing down what doesn't work and building it back up with passion, but how does that business case work against the next 4Runner?

That's very understandable and a very wise answer, which I can also learn from myself. I only get lucky in some cases, looking in the right places or talking to key people, but even that isn't always 100%. Well stated.

My 93 XE v6 mt pathy was at 250k with no engine issues at all when I left it at the dealer, but the frame was rusted to shit from NY,
I wanted a pu for my dirt bike and was hoping for that legendary Taco longevity, the engine that could seems ok but the transmission that can't seems to be the weak point; absolutely going to do a transmission flush at 50k and see how it goes...not holding onto a sinking ship.

    For anyone interested:

I am going to list a trajectory of dates and etc, because I am rather disappointed that a lot of news media, websites, forum reporters, Instahos and YouTube clowns, have not picked up on certain insight and provided info on WHEN to expect all these redesigns, instead of resorting to BS clickbait.

I have honestly been talking about TNGA-F since 2016 and no one else (save for a few Lexus buffs) made any mention of it until 2019-2020. News seems to travel slowly unfortunately, being that Toyota finally confirmed it in May 2021 via the Land Cruiser.

I read that Ford completely scrapped the Bronco Pickup as it would have basically made the Ranger obsolete.

That certainly will not be the next Gen Tacoma, but really not a bad idea for Toyota to make a little competitor to the Maverick and Santa Cruz.

@Carmaker1, is there a glossary somewhere for all the acronyms? :anonymous:
And just a question what will be the last for a 100% petrol powered with a manual trans Tacoma?
Until battery tech quadruples battery distance I really can’t see electric power 4x4’s taking the lead!
Is Tesla going to install charging stations in the middle of BFE? Or does one need to string a 500 mile long charging cord. Don’t think solar panels will cut it because it’s much easier to carry extra gas then long charging cord! I really don’t think outdoors men sorry people will want to travel at night and recharge during the day. :notsure:

Haha, I tried not to comment on that for a very long time, as it's too close to home for me. All things T6 are not necessarily my field, but my SO's. I work with 1/2 to 3/4 ton (ie T3 and next gen). From what I recall, it wasn't quite done yet, but being studied. I never liked the idea personally, even though my SO owns a Gladiator Rubi 6MT for "research" and in the end, the upcoming P703 is too much of an ambitious project for not only global against the Hilux, but the more upmarket Tacoma over here.

Toyota better bring it for MY 2024, as at the end of day, I won't go broke if one teams beats the other. New Ranger will be much better than current truck and looks great in all versions, especially new Raptor. 2023MY will become difficult for Toyota, that they better start their drip feed on Gen 4 Tacoma in mid-2022 (teasing prototypes). Anyway in terms of Bronco pickup, we don't have the factory capacity to add a Bronco pickup at the sole factory shared with Ranger (MAP) and cannot justify another new USA plant at the moment, for an ICE product that is already so niche and not 100% proven in terms of sales+profits.

I am so sorry, it's 3:40 now and I will have to state more in a little bit. Luckily I have TH & Fr off lol. TBA is To Be Announced and TBD To Be Determined. MMC, is color coded I think. The longer acronyms are for Toyota plants. Yes, Tacoma will no longer offer a manual transmission when 2GR-FKS is gone. T24A-FTS is the new powertrain.

What the heck is “2GR-FKS” and when the last year?

Hell in 10 to 15 years I be able to leave my keys in the ignition in my manual and not worry about it getting stolen…

Sad World we are making, kids can break through fire walls but they can’t drive a manual transmission. Sad Sad World. And here’s something even worse is having auto power windows in vehicles! What’s the World coming to when as a person you’re to F-ing lazy to hold a button or switch for 2 to 3 seconds. Oh, that takes to much time I’m need more time to text and sleep behind the wheel. I see that crap I feel like getting a 68 one ton camper special and welding a couple of railroad tracks across the rear. Pull in front of the driver sleeping and slamming on the brakes! Then smile as they disappear from sight from the rear view mirror.

If they do away with manual transmission’s, and I believe they will, I will never buy a new truck from Toyota again.

Nissan Frontier ditched the manual, and so what is left? Maybe a Chevy Colorado cause you get a front and rear locker? Nah. New ranger hopefully looks like a mini F150? I could go for it, maybe. Hopefully it’s front end doesn’t look like a minivan again. But then again, I want a truck I can work on myself.

The market is out of control! Every truck is automatic, and has like 500 horsepower! I don’t need that shit! Maybe I’m getting old, but the options have dwindled. I’d never buy a third gen. And at the rate things are going, I probably won’t be able to afford a new truck ever again for the rest of my life.

My 2nd gen will be pried from my cold, dead hands. Not to say I won’t buy another truck, but it won’t be a new one for $70k, this shit is unreal.
