Needing some help. 2016 TRD sport w/ manual transmission. I pull a bass boat somewhere in The range of 3000lb. I store the boat to where I have to pull it up gravel drive for about 90 ft. In 2wd, I can pull the boat up any hill however I need 4x4 for the gravel. When in 4x4 and towing from a stop this truck has no power! It will start pulling up the hill (while I have the pedal to flirt) and will stall out halfway up as if I have not give it enough throttle. Why is this happening?? Especially in 4 Low?!? Like I am trying to start in 3rd.

I think it's pretty normal. These engines have no torque at low RPM. Mine feels boggy on soft terrain at crawling speeds. I use 4 Low more in this truck than any other I've owned. 4 Low puts you in the power band of 2-4k rpm, which this engine loves. I'm surprised you notice it in low too. Maybe it's because you have an MT? What RPM are you running at?

    Be more specific.
Fine in 2hi but wheels spin?
    Tried 4hi ?
    Only does it in 4Lo?
    Any turns, binding driveline?

Nothing to do with torque or HP. It is the traction control system limiting your throttle due to wheelspin. Disable the traction control via the trac off button, or pull the boat up in 4lo.

I would say this sounds normal. I strongly doubt it wants to stall in 4lo it just goes slow in that range. Use more revs.

I rev up to 2-3 before releasing clutch then even floored, it crawls until it stalls out.

The traction control doesn't do anything unless there is wheel spin. Are you completely loosing traction in 4x4? Must be a hell of a hill.

If the traction control system were limiting power due to wheelspin he would see an indication on the cluster (flashing Amber truck symbol with wavy tire tracks). This doesn't happen with just a little bit of wheelspin either.
My '16 M/T would behave similarly when trying to take off on a steep hill. It would sometimes bog for a few seconds with very little power until the RPM rose a bit and then it would take off all of a sudden. The difference I see here is that the OP's situation is compounded by the fact he is also dragging 3000+ lbs up a hill. While there could be another culprit, I'd bet it has to do with the factory tune. There are two ways to mitigate this particular problem, either get your truck updated to the latest Toyota calibration (04B13, which is free), or purchase OVTUNE. Neither gets rid of all the sub-standard behaviour completely, but it sure helps. Not bench racing here, I've run both.

On a boat ramp there is lots of wheelspin.

For me, my traction control will kick in when one of the rear tires gets unloaded turning upwards around a corner on a dry hill. I attribute it to the crappy traction you get from K02s on the street.

It’s not a bad hill but, it is gravel and pulling a boat. Again, no issue pulling the boat from a dead stop on a hill in 2wd. But I’m 4 Lo there is no throttle. It will start pulling up the hill but never gain speed or rpm. Even with the pedal on the floor it loses rpm until the truck dies

OP, this man above is speaking truth and there's a lot of info around here about it. this kinda sounds like a TC issue to me, but perhaps the driving/clutching technique is part of this ..? anyway, many 3rd gen owners of 2016 trucks had a very poor ECU calibration from the factory and it can be hellish in that particular situation involving 1st & 2nd , this is where that calibration falls flat. it has recently had a factory fix released, and it's a true actual fix for almost everyone. but it's not so straightforward. look below for more info. if you're a MT owner of a 3rd gen Tacoma, you need to be involved to get the best out of it...

If it’s not traction, use the clutch. Get the engine to where it’s making power, 3~4K, then ease the clutch out to the biting point, and slip the clutch while applying a touch more power. Idea is to keep the engine up in RPM until the truck is actually moving at the speed that matches the RPM. So your using the clutch to control the speed not the accelerator. No that’s not going to burn the clutch out, not unless you do it every time you drive.

Took truck to Toyota for the above mentioned software update. This did not help my issue but it does drive better when not towing. Also, tried turning off traction control....did not help either. Also exact boat and trailer weight is approx 2800lbs. Toyota ran for codes but nothing flashed. Any other suggestions?!

Sounds like your traction control is braking and cuttting engine power. Turn it off.
