    Hi there!.

I'm new to this forum, and i have a question, i did some research but can't get an perfect answer so my question is:

How long does it takes to engage the 4wd on a Tacoma TRD 4x4 2010?

The question is because when i switch to 4H, the 4wd light flashes for about 1 minute or maybe a little more (doesn't matter if running or completely stopped) before the system is engaged and the light stop flashing. Once the system is engaged i can switch to 4L with no problem.

This concerns me because to me i doesn't feel normal that takes so long to engaged. Can you guys give me your opinion or experience.

Note: Once the 4WD system is engaged 4x4 works normal and feels strong.

It should engage much quicker than that. A couple seconds at most. But, if you're on a hill you may need to put it in neutral and let the truck roll a foot or two and that usually helps it engage. Also make sure wheels are straight, too. Mine won't engage under load on a grade every time unless I do that roll technique to take the load off the diff/transfer case.

easiest to get it to engage while you are cruising 10mph+ Flip it to 4hi, let off the gas and make an ever so slight turn and it will usually pop right in. Letting off the gas unloads everything so things slid in easier, and the slight turn makes all 4 wheels spin at slightly different rates so the engagement teeth of the front ADD and transfer case have the chance to fall into place.

That's usually what I do, too. I like to engage it at lower speeds on straight, flat ground and it always goes right in and disengages the same way, too.

Yes, i've tried that, 10 mph, 20 mph, 35 mph and with a stopped vehicle and always the same.

Today i decided to activate the 4x4 as owner manual says you should engage the 4wd system once in a while to properly maintain working. I've noticed this since 4 months ago, but never payed too much attention until today.
