I'm at the Toyota dealership and they told me my front end could be binding so that's why it won't engage in 4wd. Has anyone heard of this?

When I turn the switch the 4X4 just blinks and doesn't engage. Thought it was the front differential actuator after reading on here but maybe I'm wrong?

I thought binding was caused by 4x4 engaging on high traction surfaces...

Had a friend with the same problem. Pulled his actuator and threw the switch and it never moved. Checked electrical at the connector and it showed voltage when the switch was thrown, so the problem was the actuator. Took it apart and it was full of mud and had corroded all the electronics. Took some sandpaper and wd40 to the limit switches. Disassembled the motor, cleaned the brushes and flushed the whole thing with a generous amount of WD40. Put it all back together and it worked.

binding ? LOL...try engaging in a straight line...no binding there

when it still doesn't engage smack them in the head for BS'ing you

*in a straight line you can bind, if the wheels are different diameters,
as in one pair severely worn, and the other pair brand new....but it
    should still go into 4wd.

Well the dealer lacks intelligence as always.
It was the actuator just as I thought. Dealer is covering full cost. I don't have to spend a dime. :)
