The entire front suspension is generally different on a 2wd model vs. the 4wd. This means that it is a lot more work then just bolting in the diff and axles because, well, it won't fit. If you want an IFS front end like any other 4wd Tacoma the only practical way is to sell yours and buy a 4x4 model.

The other way is to cut out your existing front suspension and convert it to a solid axle. This would involve fabricating a suspension as well as steering. You would also have to change transmissions so that you can add the transfer case as well as a front drive shaft. This keeping it just to the simple things...

In all you would be looking at probably $4000-5000 in parts depending on how you source parts. The problem for you doing this is that you obviously don't have the mechanical moxy to do any of this yourself, which means that you would have to fork out a few grand more to have a shop do it all for you. If you need 4wd you would be much better selling yours and just buying one.

Not on the Prerunners. Same chasis, suspension, spindels, etc, as the 4x4's, sans 4x4 gear. A few people have converted theri first gens to 4x4 from Prerunner, and one guy did it for under $1000.00

In fact...All the holes for mounting the diff are on the Prerunner. Nothing to cut, drill, or weld.

If your gonna go with the same transfercase on the other Tacomas, you may need more stuff. Regardless, you will need the tranny, and drive shaft from a 4x4 also. Its best to find a totaled second gen 4x4 as a doner.

Ok, I apologize if I offended you. I was trying to say that, based upon your thread opener, it seemed like you don't have a great deal of technical know how. Therefore it would probably be best if you didn't launch into a project that was quite involved, may be better off trading the 2WD in for a 4WD. Better be up front and honest now than when you're half way through a project that is daunting.

Again, there are a number of posts on this subject in the TW archives.

X2. If your not that familliar with a wrench, best to get help, or trade for 4x4.

when i was shopping for my truck i spent alot of time at a bunch of different chevy dealers. when i was there the fleet dealer was showing me aroudn and helping me find the truck i was looking at, but he was telling me about this van that he had coverted to 4x4. he said it cost about 8k because they had to get all the new stuff, but im sure its less expensive for the tacoma. my point is, call around to the local dealers, even if you wanted to do it yourself the dealer if they knew something about this could help or gather information/ parts

It's not like this guy had his front axle or any other part of his truck sitting in his lap, asking what to do next. He was simply asking what would be involved in doing a project such as this.

Fucking hate know it alls that bag on people that ask simple questions that have simple answers.

The answer is, yes it is possible. It requires quite a bit of time, money, mechanical know-how and could probably be more worth while to make a trade and upgrade your whole truck rather than the drive.

    I just got it!
I have a 05 Pre Runner with the 4x4 system from an 06 TRD off road.

So take that. Everything is bolt on, because the Pre Runner has all the same suspension, except the bottom bracket that holds the transfer case. That had to have a new piece welded on to fit.

And no, I don't have any more information, because the previous owner had it done. But he's just a farmer. And he did it. I even have the OEM 4x4 switch, and the lights on the gauges. So if a farmer can do it, you can likely do it.
