Try putting it in park and then try putting it in 2wd. Have you tried turning off the truck turning it back on and then changing to 2wd? I'm assuming your friend's truck is a 3rd gen.

 

I have had to reverse to get the 4x to release.

 

Transfer case actuator can become contaminated and has terminals that are press fit and lose connection.
Do any water crossings recently?
