New to Tacoma and forum...and first time I had a 4x4 since you had to get out of the truck and turn the front hubs!

Have question about going from H2 to H4 on the fly (I won't ask the stealership, because they usually don't really know)...the first two times I used it the dash lite came on immediately and I felt a slight clunk when it engaged. But yesterday I turned it on in a snow and the lite kept flashing for a while before staying on (no buzzer)...and the same thing when I turned it off.

    Is that normal?

What does that flashing mean (what's happening mechanically)?

    Appreciate any experience out there.

Mine had the clunk the first couple of times then it was pretty smooth shift from H2 to H4. I had it flash a few times too and usually if I let off the gas when I switched and let it engage for accelerating again and have not had the problem since.

I have only had mine for a few months and have had the same experience as you. I have made a habit of taking my foot off the gas momentarily as I engage. There is no more prolonged flashing and no clunk. The flashing indicates the 4WD is trying to engage, it stops when complete.

    Hope this helps

when then 4x4 light is flashing your transfer case is not engaging there should be a list in a pocket on your driver side sun visor of 4x4 dos and donts

+1. If it's flashing, it's "waiting" for an appropriate time to engage. When I let off the gas, it engages. I feel a slight thump every now and again, but certainly nothing that I wouldn't expect.

I find mine sometimes goes right in but other times hesitates sightly.Where I park at work is on a slight incline and I have to put it in 4H to get up,often after spinning. When I engage, sometimes the light will flash until I give it a shot of gas.I,ve also felt a clunk from underneath when disengaging on the fly at times.

The only time I had any issues was when it was -30 degrees. It took a few seconds for it to engage. I wrote it off as it was just too cold.

I throw it into neutral when I put it in 4Hi. Force of habit. Can't do any harm.

The more you engage it, the smoother it gets.

It means it wasn't engaged yet.

Hey, that was quick...from the gist of the answers, it sounds like the lite flashing isn't a serious problem...and there are some ways to finesse it so it works better. Thanx for your help.

I'm a little OCD about my new Toy...and I have learned over the years not to trust dealer answers...now I will sleep a little better tonite. Ha!

I usually sleep better after rubbing one out and some grain alcohol in the system.

    Whatever works...

Gotta be in neutral to go into 4lo from 4hi. Its ok to go to 4hi on the fly.
