Any chance its a wire on the tranny? I only ask cause it was a large patch of slush that kickes my 4x4 off again.

it never hurts* to climb under there and disconnect/reconnect lines and wiring.

*provided you don't bugger it up in the process, or lose a fight with corrosion

Yeah... I don't think ill gamble with the corrosion. Live in a heavily wintet salted area, so corrosion is plentiful lol. As long as I can still get it into 4x4 one way or another, i won't complain.

Yeah you can get some dielectric grease too for the connectors to prevent corrosion.

But ya the fact that the light doesn't flash to indicate it is trying to switch makes me think either switch, wiring, or ECU issue.

I'm not sure of this but if it was a differential wire, I would think the light would still flash since the ECU got the command to switch it.

You need another guy with a Tacoma so you can start swapping his parts in haha. Then can narrow it down!

Had the front end on axle stands to pull tires for a brake inspection, 4x4 was fully functional again. Later on kicked back to being fussy... then worked for a short bit once I hit some rain. I'm thinking wire. But to figure out which is the pain lol. I'm ceetain its not the dash switch though.

Hello guys, new to this forum. I currently having the same issue with my 4x4. If I put switch in 4hi with truck off and then crank the truck, it will work find in both hi and lo. Leaving truck running and switch it back to 2wd then to 4 it will not work.
It won't do nothing if I crank truck in 2wd. No light flashing or anything.

Has anyone figured this problem out if so please let me know. I'm in need of help. U can reply or send me a private message on here.

    Thanks in advance

Probably have the only 2nd Gen with an 8274 in the world.
I'll keep this rolling - I have a 2007 w/6-speed doing the same thing - will engage when truck is off, intermittent with truck running. Almost got me in a bind today. Has anyone figured this out yet?

When I crank the truck, I hear the relay (or whatever it is) behind the glove box click and the 4x light blinks once at the same time as the click, but then won't engage. Thanks.

It's the front diff actuator. Mine did the exact samething. Mine would work perfect if cranked in 4x4. Until u switch it back to 2wd. Of you take front diff actuator out, then take black housing off. You will see two prongs coming off the motor. U solder both of them and it will fix the issue. It takes only about 10 mins. I did it to mine and it is working perfect now every time.

Most likely the electronic aviator on the front diff or transfer case this is a very common issue . There are some good threads on here about this issue .
