Could we use a factory lsd for a 05+ 5 lug from other tacoma models? I know the diff sizes are the same (8.4in) but you never know.

Everything that i have read on the subject indicates that only the non-TRD 4x4 rear differentials will work with our 5-lugs. In other words, no LSD out of the box with a straight component swap. However, you can serve up a Detroit truetrac, ARB locker, or similar on the aftermarket side as an add-in.

Several here have done this, in the past and relative present.. @TownvilleTim

So the LSD I got from a guy (out of a TRD Sport) will not be compatible? Are axle sizes different?

The third member itself, is different - it won't fit. Non-TRD's have no electronic locker - TRD's do.

Unfortunately, unless you are a machinist who knows his shit in modifying the mounting flange along with possibly other internal components, i'm afraid you are boned.

TRD Off-Roads have a locker and the smaller diff. Pre-'09 TRD Sports have an 8.4" with LSD, which sounds like it would work for the OP

I have been going on generally collaborating published info, online.

If i were the questioning OP, i would call ECGS first and confirm whether he's wasting his time or not - and if so, whether they'd be interested in his as a core return for the correct component. ECGS is very non-specific in this paragraph, when they say in part "..Tacoma 4x4's and Tacoma PreRunner's that don't come with the electric locker (aka "non-TRD)...". The above ECGS article can be found elsewhere on other known professional oriented sites. Other information that i've run across, generally supports this in stating "Base and SR5 Trim levels only".

I have not read of TRD anything, working in a straight swap, with the 5-lug manual. I would be delighted if this was the case, and i am proven wrong. It would open up personal upgrade possibilities. Not saying you are wrong, but preponderance of advice i've read up on pro's and con's of 3rd member options, are that the TRD versions aren't in the same snack bracket as the axle/3rd member, as used in our 5-lugs.

If the questioning OP wishes to give it a go, by all means, give 'er. He's got the 3rd member/differential already, I assume. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. He might make a new discovery. that'll prove me incorrect. Just saying, if there is corroborating information that a pre-'09 6-lug TRD 3rd-member that'll fit in our 5-lug axles .. i'm all ears! :)

(saw a youtube video recently, a 2-parter, where a guy "re-geared" his manual using gears out of some TRD or other .. totally gutted his differential. Mysteriously, in the 2nd half of the video, his 3rd member changed into a drop-in re-geared 3.58 auto 3rd member. He discovered several fitting issues with putting those TRD components into his 3rd member. Wish i could find that video, now.)

My issue was you clumping all TRDs together, Sports and Off-Roads are different.

OP- According to this thread it sounds like it should work.

Mid-thread, the following list is given - and it concurs with all that i've read. I have seen no specific mention of pre '09 Tacoma TRD 3rd's confirmed working with the 5-lug 3rd member or differential housing. I do see in that thread, vague mention of 'problems'.

    1993-1998 Toyota T100 Pickup
    2000-2006 Toyota Tundra Pickup
    2001-2007 Toyota Sequoia
1995-2010 Toyota Tacoma 4x4 (Not for use on TRD Models, eLocker)
    2001-2004 Toyota Tacoma S-Runner
    2005-2009 Toyota Tacoma X-Runner

The OP of that particular thread never confirmed or denied that he successfully used, or was using an '08 TRD (sport or otherwise) 3rd member. Someone else mentioned that they used a 3.73 third member out of a Pre-runner, but trim version is un-stated. That thread is very much a mass of confusion on the details, as are most others that i have run across.

I certainly wouldn't be going out shopping for a TRD axle for the 3rd member to be putting in my own 5-lug, whether pre- or post-'09, based upon the information on that thread. There is nothing there that can be treated as confirmational, one way or the other.

    FWIW ..

That's a list from a 3rd party locker manufacturer, who likely never tested that application. There seem to be plenty of other posts agreeing that '05+ 5-lug trucks have the same 8.4 rear differential as non TRD-Offroad, Pre-Runners and 4x4s.

I am not debating that. I agree with that assertion... the key operative being non-TRD, as you yourself have just stated.

Until i see someone successfully posting up a non off-road (or any other 2nd gen TRD version transplant for that matter) 3rd member transplant into a 5-lug with specifics, i will remain skeptical of that claim.

The safer and cheaper bet in the long run, is to go with the known, rather than the maybes of "well, a 08 TRD sport without an e-locker, should work".

The knowns, are in that list.

OPs original question was about a factory LSD which never came in an Off-Road, only Sports and SR5s which share the same 8.4" differential. I'm not even sure what you're arguing about at this point. Sure it's not an everyday mod, but is it technically possible? Yes

I said non TRD-Offroad which is literally every 05+ Tacoma, including pre 09 TRD Sports with the factory LSD. They are all the same 8.4" diff. Unless you are saying there are variants of the 8.4 which are different, which I've never heard of or read about

There's so much confusion without actual confirmation of anyone actually doing this to say one way or another. I had to do research and then talk to someone who actually did it. Manual 5 lug come with 3.31 gears. I've actually had my 3rd member swapped with 3.73 gears from 2013 v6. 4.11 from 4x4 4 cylinder should work as well. Far as LSD... the non electronic lock LSD should work as well. I think the 2009 come with LSD...so if you want to get LSD factory...get a 3.73 LSD from that 3rd member.

It all should bolt up.. the LSD is inside the ring/pinion... I saw no need for LSD given 2wd and I don't off road.

Yes - the argument/discussion is getting confusing.

What i'm arguing - is that while there are various versions of our Tacoma's, with potential donors available in the SR5 and base trim levels , as well as other Tacoma product - everything i have read indicates a 3rd member incompatibility issue that *could* be overcome with a machinists talents, and is a complete and entire waste of time for other mere mortals to attempt.

I've read elsewhere that there is a difference in the gears/third members being used in TRD versions, as well as the mounting flange of the TRD differential, that render them incompatible for a 5-lug auto transmission, for a bolt-on and go re-gear. The 5-lug manual requires a complete 3rd member to re-gear that 5-lug variant - you can't simply regear a manual, 5-lug 3rd member, with it's 3.31 final drive 3rd member.

Auto == 3.58 final drive ratio redoable with replacement gears alone, from any other known compatible Toyota model, non-TRD version.

A complete assembled replacement 3rd member from ECGS with appropriate regearing, along with perhaps a mechanical, or air-locker add-on, is the most straight forward exchange fix for the manual 3.31. ECGS isn't interested in the manual 3.31 as a core return, btw.. it's incompatible with everything else in the Tacoma line-up.

You're still talking about a TRD-Offroad....that's been agreed doesn't work. Everything else does, including, you guessed it, the TRD Sport. For fucks sake you are the one that is making this confusing

Back to square one. Show me incontrovertible proof that you or somone else has gotten a TRD sport specific differential/3rd member or gearing working with the 5-lug differential and 3rd member.. Preferrably first-hand testimony. That is the Holy Grail to 5-luggers. Ball is in your court.

Please don't swear, i'm Canadian and might need a safe space from such hurtful words.

The guy who just posted above you earlier, went to 3.73s from a v6 truck with a 8.4 diff. Sports are the same exact diff, with lsd clutch packs instead of spider gears. That is the only difference.

I know this is tiresome, but the Prerunner came in Base and SR5 versions that also had those gearings. There was also a TRD Prerunner version. Cappy Cap was non-specific on the Prerunner trim level, that the donor gearing came from.

Sorry, but still very unclear - especially with this post in that thread by Cappy Cap.

    Night.

    Sorry gents--
Didn't mean for anyone to get their hackles up. I was only hoping that the limited slip diff (out of '06 trd sport) would fit my '05 2wd.
All I bought was the LSD. No carrier, no ring gear. This is all extremely good background info, as I was not aware that not all recent-model tacoma carriers are the same.
