You could probably get by with 235 70r16 if you went up to a 16 inch wheel.

I run 225/75R16 on mine and I still have a good 20mm+ clearance from the swaybar and other components. I removed the black boxes under the wheel well liners to install mudflaps so I have a little extra clearance at the rear of the wheel wells.

Play with this and find a 16" that's really close in total dia to the OE tire.

You'll keep your speedo/odo accurate and not have clearance issues, assuming you pick a wheel with the correct width/offset.

To provide information to you - you need to provide better information. What is the rim offset/back-spacing. OEM is +45. What is the rim width .. 16x7, 16x8?

At the very least, a fender-well black-box deletion will be necessary.

This is a near 30" class tire at 29.9" .. it's going to have some impact on your gearing.. whether it's tolerable as-is to you.. is a judgement you will need to make.

I run 225/75R16. They fit on even before lift/level .. and i still have my fender-well black-boxes .. but they also measure in at 29.3" in diameter. Stock manual 3.31 gearing is barely tolerable to me - not worth the expense to rectify... if i was at 29.9", that tune might change.

Play with this site a bit, and and also read-read-read this 5-lug sub-forum... there are no easy answers unfortunately. Too many variables that need to be considered.

Stock/OEM Steel wheels. 15" Current tires are 215/70R15. Going to a 235/75R15. Same steel wheels. Finding 16" alloy has proven difficult. Is the 235/75R15 set-up at 28.88 inches and 9 1/4 inches wide ok as a replacement?

Plenty of people run 235/75R15's on this sub-group - some on the OEM 15x6 rims, some have bought aftermarket stamped steel (ie cragers) or a variation of alloy. Some have stuck to the OEMish +45 offset that keeps the rims/tires well under the fender well lip... others have gone more aggressive to a lower positive offset, or entered into negative offset territory for a really aggressive appearance.

Please expand on the "+45 offset". I would like to alter the appearance a little. Any suggestions are appreciated.

The offset of a wheel is the distance from the hub mounting surface to the center line of the wheel. The wheel offset is measured in millimeters and results in a positive, negative, or zero offset. Positive offset is when the hub mounting surface is toward the front or wheel side of the wheel.

What is a wheel offset explained - TSW.com

    www.tsw.com/explore-tsw-custom-wheels/what-is-wheel-offset.php

Plainly spoken - the 2wd 5-lug has a high positive offset rim, which sets the rim/wheel assembly into the wheel-well of the Tacoma - this is a part of the Tacoma 5-lugs scaled down suspension setup, using a different axle, suspension and running gear than the 6-lug tacomas.

The 5-lug, as OEM, uses a high positive offset rim that is more often found with cars, light suv and minivan platforms. Some of the 5-lug guys messing with the rim/tire combinations, are also trying to mimic the appearance of the 6-lug in terms of the rim/tire assembly not appearing quite so tucked into the wheel-wells - they'd be looking at a rim with a positive offset figure in the neighborhood of +10. Those who really are looking to go to town with the 'stance' appearance.. they are eyeballing -18.

The lower the offset - the further out the rims will sit on the 5-lug axle stub. The cost is increased wear on the axle bearings.

The following needs to be gone through, and explains it so much better than i.
