The person I quoted said a ten dollar gauge. Sorry if you are cheap, I’m not and don’t rely on garbage dollar store pressure gauges.

Also if you think getting out and manually checking tires is the same as looking at a display then I can see why you trust a dollar store gauge.

Lastly I can be driving on the freeway feel something might be off check my pressure on the dash. All is good. You have exit the freeway and check all four. Enjoy that my friend. I’ll stick to the dash. :D

I DON'T trust a dollar store gauge, I said DON'T do that, maybe try reading what I type next time ;)

and a $10 gauge plenty accurate, you're not checking psi on a supercar or a racecar or some medical equipment. It's certainly at the least as accurate as your tpms...and it's not that you need to get out and check it's just pathetic that you find it so bothersome, I too rely on the dash but I also have gotten out plenty of times as well because I was having odd tire wear issues, so just to verify it I checked and you know what!? the dash isn't accurate!!! Not sorry that all butt hurt but quit trying to lash back for being called a ... if you are actually going to keep being one...just proving the point really aren't you XD

    good day sir, I'm out

You are the one said I rely on a cheap gauge. Which was referencing a 10 dollar gauge. So…maybe you should read?

Im not trying to prove anything. All I said is the dash is easier so I’ll rely on that. Unless I’m airing up tires or something. Then I’ll use a gauge. Then you flipped out, attempted to insult me but left off the insult for some reason.

So back to my point…I’ll enjoy the ease of the dash. You enjoy manually checking your tires. Easy as that.

my Autozone gauge from 2000 has been in 5 vehicles and has served me well for 22 years. i dont need pin point accuracy to fill my tires. Consistency on the gauge is what matters.

Get tpms sensors in all 5 tires. When you have the spare in rotation move the truck out of range of the spare and press the toms reset button.

My wife’s 4Runner has 5 TPMS sensors. Wish the Tacoma did. It’s handy knowing the spare has enough air when you need it. Be a crappy surprise to get it down and it’s flat. Bought everybody in the family 12v air compressors at Home Depot last year for Christmas.

checking it once a year should be good enough for any surprise.

Doesn’t work that way since these 3rd Gen Tacomas only see/read four sensors. Please try again.

Early 2nd Tacomas do work with 5 sensors.

It's a bummer. Huge fan of 5 tire rotation, even dropped the coin to do it on my '17 OR, but no luck (Other options have been discussed here). Kinda sad my '08 Audi and '13 VW juggled 5 TPMS no problem...

There are 2 other options (Granted, these are just cheating the warning lamp):
    1) "Pipe bomb"
Anyone built a TPMS pipebomb? | Tacoma World
    2) Have 3 more holes drilled in your spare tire steely, and mount all 4 sensors in the spare

It's not a legality or mandatory question, as already stated its safety but more so for fuel efficiency. The vehicle manufacture legally has to put them on the vehicle, same with DRL's and TCS's. No one can be pulled over and ticketed for not having these systems operating. In the case of state inspections, You can't have warning lights on your dash and pass inspection, weather the TPMS is working or not, if the TPMS light is off, you pass.
As for what to do with a 5th tire? just keep an eye on that tire and check it occasionally, ya know, like we used to back in the good old days.

Thats because they make lots of easy money selling them to people. Extra $20-$30 per tire, they'll mount the tires if you bring them in off the vehicle.

Luckily, Michigan did away with inspections years ago after they were proven to be ineffective and mostly burdened low income families. It really is shocking how some states are still starting these inspections just to generate revenue.

Read it again "Get TPMS sensors in all 5 tires. When you have the spare in rotation move the truck out of range of the spare and press the TPMS reset button."

You can can TMPS sensors in all 5 wheels. If you only have 4 sensors in the wheels mounted on the truck are paired to the TPMS. The 5th wheel is 30+ feet away when the truck is learning the four tires mounted to it. So at any time the truck is only reading 4 sensors, but a 5th ne exists as the spare.

No, this does not work. The TPMS senders in the rims have to be programmed into the truck via 1) Techstream, 2) another Toyota product I am not familiar with, something like "Clarista" or a 3) specialized mini programmer that tire shops use. The vehicle has only four slots available in the computer for TPMS sensors, a fifth will not be recognized. Pressing the "programming" button under the dash only finds where the four programmed sensors are by corner of the vehicle.

    See post #3.

To expand on the comments actually addressing your question; you use one of the programming methods mentioned (techstream, Bluetooth obdII like Carista, tpms tool) to remove the sensor # of the new spare and add the sensor # of the old spare which you’re mounting. You have to know the senor id #s to use techstream or Bluetooth dongles, and can’t get them without a tpms tool or breaking the bead of the tire to find it on the actual sensor. So if you have them, write them down somewhere or label the back of the wheels.

Then press and hold the tpms button under the dash until the tpms warning light flashes 3 times and drive for a while until the readings show up. As mentioned above, the button only learns sensor locations. The truck isn’t capable of reading sensor ids that aren’t programmed into the ecu manually through one of the three methods mentioned.
