Took in my 2016 TRD Sport to local dealer for its 5K mile service. I waited on the truck. When it was done, the service guy told me oil/filter change was not included. I said I have heard from many that their dealers have changed the oil/filter at their 5K service. He said NO, They did not.

Took the truck home to change the oil. When I tool the drain plug out, the oil coming out was very clean. When I took the skid plate off, I saw oil drips on the inside where it was right under the filter. When took the filter housing off, the filter looked brand new!!

With 5100 miles and almost 8 months of driving, there is no way both oil and filter could look that clean. I don't know what the service technician denied having an oil/filter change done on the truck.

The dealers will not change it at 5k because according to them the book says every 10k. Now, the book does actually says its only required ever 10k miles but it does also say that there are several factors ( like off-roading, towing, excessive idle, etc) that would change the oil/filter replacement to every 5k. The dealer does not read the owners manual so they're likely not aware of the 5k exception. They refused to do my oil change at 5k as well even though I pointed this out to them and only rotated the tires plus inspection. But don't even get me started on my local dealer

When I left the dealership with my new truck, there was a sticker in the window saying the first service was at 5000 miles . At 5000 miles I brought it to a Toyota dealership and they changed the oil and filter and also did a software upgrade to my transmission which corrected the shifting issues I was having. The new sticker says my next service appointment (oil filter, etc.) is at 10,000 miles. Everything the dealership did was free , no cost to me .

One thing I would mention to the dealer is the time factor listed for service, especially for fluids. It would take me almost two years to get to 10K.
No way would I wait that long.

I took mine in for the 6 month or 5,000 mile or sooner service. The truck was only 4300 miles but a week late for 6 months. I paid the $80. to have filter and oil change. My personal choice to change the oil early.

I had my first oil change done at 3800 miles and second at 10k, had to pay for the 3800 one which was fine. Just had the 15k servicing done (no oil change) and Im still up in the air if I want to get another oil change at 15k before the factory one at 20k

Now that you've opened it up, finish your oil change and don't worry about it.

In the grand scheme of life, and the life of your truck, it's not a big enough pebble to make a ripple.

I am never going to go 10000 miles between oil changes. I don't care what the recommendations are in the owners manual.

Tire rotation, basic inspection and looked at some other issues which they did absolutely not to fix or even address but that's another story. Hard to find a good dealership

An unusually high amount of pinstriping.
I was advised by my sales person to get the oil changed every 5K due to abnormal amount of off road driving, even though I may have to pay for it. I guess I will find out in a few weeks, when I take it in for the 5K service.
Was planing on having the oil changed every 5k anyways so not to big of a deal, although it would be nice if it was covered.

The only true way to know if you need an oil change is to have an oil analysis performed on your used motor oil after all that off roading. Synthetic oil is used in these trucks and it is a lot more resilient then conventional oil

I agree that having an oil analysis in the best way to determine if an oil change is needed. For me it's not worth the hassle. I used synthetic oil and did oil analysis on an old 7.3 ford that I had for years. It told me a lot of things, and some times I would push oil changes, but it was kind of a pain to deal with. I still use synthetic oil, but I have just put my oil changes at 5k and its work out.

Where did you see the "done every 5k miles" part. It's not in my paperwork.

Yes, because Toyota and many other automakers have invested millions and millions of dollars into Research and Development to just guess and say "Let's just put 10k and see how that goes for people"

If it says 10K in the manual, it could probably safely go 12 or 15k with no damage.....
