The only thing I dont like about it is the reving between gears. I love how low 1st gear is...feels like a truck should IMHO. I agree 6th could be taller but oh well. I have 285's BFG's on it and I'm lucky to get 16 in town but I didnt buy if for gas mileage.

U will get that with any new manual tranny now.

    It is the Throttle-by-wire, fly - by-wire, drvie-by-wire.....

Keeps the rev for second to burn off the fuel for emmissions.

mine did it when it was new but now i never get it when i shift....except for the first hour or so of driving once the battery has been disconnected:confused: seems like the truck 'learns' my driving habbits and the revving goes away. all in all, i love my 6speed not that its broken in and smooth. once in a while i'll regret it when towing a backhoe or bobcat or something real heavy but it seems good to me:rolleyes::cool:

I bought a 2009 TRD 4x4 6 speed a couple of months ago. I drove it for 6k and sold it earlier this week. I tried to like it, but in the end my gut won out. I got an offer close to what I paid so I let' er go. I picked up a 2009 TRD 4x4 long box AUTO transmission with Leather.

I remembered the romance of driving my Landcruiser 4 speed stick when I was younger and this is why I went with the stick on the Tacoma. I guess I am becoming an old man because it drove me nuts, especially in the city.

However I found that it shifted nice, no problem getting use to it like some report. It was definately geared funny thoughÉ I would skip gears on a regular basis as they seemed very close together. Merging onto a hiway or high speed road I would go 1st to 3rd to 5th, without bogging and getting great acceleration even with missing a whole gear.

Feels 100% like I did the right thing. Don`t miss the shifting at all. I also hear the «auto gets better mileage. Time will tell.

I gotta say I am getting more and more disappointed at my 2011 Manual. I have driven cars/trucks all manual over the years and this truck (3rd Tacoma) is idling like crazy. This fly by wire electronic management is slow and F#$%ing irritating, most manual drivers know what to expect from a stick, and this truck is out there in terms of "normal" performance. I am hoping it will get better as I am approaching the 10,000 klm mark. I have a little hope left in the fact that this intelligent truck might start to learn quick before I go back to the dealer.
Gas should be let off and on its way to 'normal' idle in between gear changes PERIOD!
Not - hold 1500 revs for 4 sec between gears so you mash up your tranny and gearbox. Aghhh Help !
    Peace.

Have you read any of the posts about things smoothing out at higher mileage? Like 20-30k miles? Your 10,000 klm, or roughly 6,214 miles, is barely even broken in yet. Hell, Toyota themselves don't recommend towing until you've put 5k on it. And everyone on here says you need more.

I bought the the 6 speed in 2005 on my Taco and I have no regrets, I have always loved driving a manual. When towing it does just great no issues with the gears sticking, mine seems smooth.
Maybe it is in the newer tacos not sure just know I love mine

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
I found a heavier shift knob from sickspeed.com really helped the shifting experience with my 5 speed.

The 6spd is not as bad as it's made out to be. Some complain about the low 1st gear look up the specs for other small trucks, Frontier's is even lower, 6th gear is great for towing you can pull a load in 6th where an automatic will down shift to the point you have to lock out O/D. An automatic will get better mileage unless you really know how to drive a stick I get the top mileage that is rate for an auto but maybe that's because I've only been driving a stick for 50 years. The rev thing is just the way it is all modern stick shift cars/trucks do that to some extent it's all about emissions. Both are excellent transmissions yes there is a learning curve to the 6 spd but after awhile you can shift as smooth as the auto can. The auto requires no learning curve you put it in gear and press on the gas. There is no right or wrong if you drive the auto good for you you like a stick it just what you need.

Agreed. These guys should try a fuller 15 speed behind a Cummins NTC 335:D

I wouldn't mind a higher 6th gear though, and leave it alone when towing heavy trailers.

Mack triplex comes to mind now that's a learning curve. If I did not need to tow I agree the 6th gear could be a bit higher for the highway but don't think it would make a lot of difference in economy.

Works as good as any other TRUCK transmission I've had in the past and seems to be getting better.

I have had the same problem with coming out of 1st and the truck vibrates you to death. I have also experienced myself looking for another gear after 6th. Overall, its still a Taco...and its still mine. It took some getting used to but i still love it.

I have no idea what people are complaining about with the 6 speed. I have 20k on my 2011 and I love it. Once its warm, which only takes a minute or two, its extremely smooth. It takes some getting used to, but try driving an old Wrangler and see how far things have come...
