Searching the forum didn't provide any insight; can anyone point me in the right direction to explore the possibility of swapping transmissions to have a 6 speed manual in a 2002 manual 4x4 3.4l Taco ?

My guess is that they won't line up, but I really don't know. Out of curiosity, why are you looking into it?

I'd like to drop engine rpm's at highway speeds; adding an overdrive in effect.

Yup. Not going to do a damn thing to lower your highway RPM. Still only one overdrive, and the manual 2nd gens get less MPG than the autos due to higher RPM in top gear on the freeway.

Why do you want to lower RPM? If it's for MPG, do a cost-benefit analysis first, the number probably don't work out.

Thanks for the ratios guys, I didn't have those. Don't really want to play with the diffs as I'm already at 4.10 which seems to give a good balance of off road torque and on road economy.

If you want to lower your RPM's, you could switch to a slightly larger tire when your current set wears out.

Lowering RPMs isn't going to help you anyways for better MPGs.

Lowering the RPMS takes the truck out of the real power band of the 3.4l. And increase the load put on the motor so the motor ends up working harder and dumping more fuel that doesn't get burned all the way.

Its why when guys who put 33s or 35s on who regear usually gain an MPG or 2 back. Less load is on the motor even though they are running at 4-600rpm higher.

Granted, thier MPGs still aren't grate usually as most have armor and weigh more then a stock tacoma..haha but they still gain some back is my point.

what your wanting to do..will make your MPGs worse.

Maybe gear vendors has a solution for you . http://www.gearvendors.com/

If they cant bolt you up , try Laylock Denormanville , Doug Nash and Western Differential . Might be able to turn that 5 speed into a 10 speed

Guess I have to respectfully disagree.

Clearly, in any gear, if I am lugging the engine I will not only increase the wear and tear on the engine but, as BlackDawg pointed out, I will waste fuel.

However, if I am in a fairly steady state condition like on a highway doing 70 mph and I can drop my RPM's from 2750 to say 2450, I'm going to save fuel.

When properly accounting for the change in circumference, I got better gas mileage when I had 33" tires with 4.10 gears than when I was running 32" tires with 4.10 or 33" tires with 4.56 gears. Of course, with the 33" tires and 4.10 gears, I stopped attempting to rabbit off the line.

    This is most assuredly correct.

I would hope to spend more time than money on the project and this stuff is fun to me and so hopefully would tip the balance in my favor.

I totally get it. I've spent plenty of money on my trucks over the years. :D

    stock-ish
The 6spd will increase MPG over the 5-spd just by closing the RPM gap between gears due to the closer gear ratio in the 6spd vs the 5spd, but not enough to justify the cost/time/labor/headaches to make it work. If it were a simple conversion, I'd look into it for my 3RZ because the W59 5spd's gears are a bit tall, even with stock 4.30's.

Do you happen to know the axle code on your truck with stock 4.30's? I hear about some 4x4 3rz 5sp trucks that have 4.30 but mine has the door code for 4.10.
