I think my Ps3 $shit the bed this week.:smash: It is an 80Gb (MotorStorm bundle). This past week it had been freezing frequently while playing Lego Batman, GTA IV, and MW 2. It's to the point now that it's not even worth turning on.:frusty: I'm out of warranty. Any body else suffering from this? I can't afford to replace it and even if I could, I don't think I would. The lifespan of this ps3 (compared to previous generations) has been a dissappointment, to say the least.

I really liked it while it worked. I think this problem affects the older Ps3s. I got mine Xmas of 07.

Same thing happened to my buddy last week, he took it into bestbuy even though his warranty had expired, told them that he thought it was still underwarranty but did not have any paper work for it. Geek squad just took it off his hands and replaced it with a brand new 250gb model. No questions. took him 15 min round trip.

$109 + one way shipping...they will fix it. Sony will want $159. mine went there (PSR) this summer...no problems since. Blue ray reader is likely shot. do you leave it on for extended periods? mine is also 80g motorstorm bundle.

So far, I updated it (latest update is Firmware 3.15), although games load faster, they still freeze up. Took it apart (this voids warranty if you have one) and cleaned the blueray lens, didn't help. Finally, took it completely apart and cleaned it....still no-go. I suspect the bluray player is shot. I don't have any bluray discs as this is a game system for me. I havn't tried a regular dvd or an old ps2 game yet to see if they work. Now that I've taken it apart twice, I'll attemp to repair it if I can pinpoint the exact problem.

I saw your previous thread. If I can find the part and a tutorial, I may attempt to repair it myself.

I sent mine into sony (I blew it up with a non grounded hdmi loop, long story) $159 and they sent me a new one...I was out of warranty. I think they just send you a refurbed one...

My research tells me the same about getting a refurb back from Sony. I'm just pissed cause I took good care of it and didn't even use it excessively. No online play, no movies, and I always shut off the main power when I wasn't playing. Hell, I only have 6 games for the thing including Motorstorm. I've only rented maybe three titles the entire time i've owned it.

I have an xbox and mine was getting some problems. I was play MW2 for 2 weeks then all of a sudden on Friday it decided not to read the disc. I got it to work again because I installed the game to the HDD. I thought it was the game so I went back and got a new one (twice). Brand new out the box and still unreadable. Probably something wrong with the drive? Who knows. If I had the chance I'd get the PS3. No need to pay for online gaming and a blu-ray player. But I got my xbox for $150 brand new with 20GB.

I don't have the yellow light of death, although I've heard of it. Is the thermal compound the paste between the heat sink and the chips? If it is, mine isn't all dried up like what I've read about.

I'll play with my old PS2 before I'll buy an xbox. That's right, my fat old original ps2 still works great!

The blu-ray drive went out in my roommates PS3 (RelentlessTaco) we took the old blu-ray drive out and threw a new one in off of Ebay and its worked ever since. Its not hard at all. Good luck to ya!

The same thing happened to my PS3 it is an earlier model 12/07. It was out of warranty so I just said screw it and bought a new 120gb slim PS3 for 299. I will try the EBay blu-ray player to see if it works for the old one though. I am a bit pissed because I have and original PS2 that still works I would have thought a PS3 would have lasted more than a year and a half. I guess they tried to rush production to much to meet demand and this is what we get.

We've had our PS3 since they first came out.

Yeah, we had problems with it freezing up and stuff. But - we discovered the thing was getting too hot. We had it sitting on a separate shelf in our entertainment center.

So, we have to get it out of the entertainment center and set it on the floor where it can get plenty of air.....to keep it cool.

Other than that...no other problems with it.

There are special fans you can buy online that'll help cool it off. But I don't know how well they work.
