Bought my truck with 85k miles and it now has 132k. Ever since I bought it, it grinds into 5th gear unless I depress clutch, wait a couple beats then put it into 5th. Sometimes it grinds into 4th if I shift to quickly. ANY ideas on why it does this and if it's a common issue with the 6spd?

Sounds like synchros are going out on 4th and already out on 5th.

I bought mine with 123,000 km. Fifth would grind pretty bad if I shifted at high rpm. I think the issue is worn syncros, I expect that the tranny was rode hard under previous ownership. I found double clutching helped, and that down shifting to 5th from 6th was never a problem. I have learned to sync for 6th before shifting to 5th and now don't even notice the issue.

I'm interested to hear what others have to say.

I used to have a 6 speed manual 2nd gen and Royal Purple synthetic oil made it shift a lot smoother. But mine was more grumpy between 3rd & 4th.

A lot of members at TW change out their fluid for Red Line fluids and replace the shifter bushing when they start having small issues with shifting

What are Tacoma owners saying about the 6 speed ? http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/2nd-gen-tacomas/285705-how-6-spd-standard-tacoma.html

Has the 6 speed improved over the years ? http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/2n...ve-6-speed-manual-transmissions-improved.html

Here is the part number to replace the shifter bushing
Toyota Part no. 33548-60040 . You can also get this bushing from Marlin Crawler and all the guys say its better than the factory bushing

    Little bit of stuff.
My 06 does the same going into 3rd, and it is the synchro set. possible solutions are replacing the ring set at about $550 a piece (per gear) or using a synchromesh fluid in place of the usual 75w90 gear oil. or you can double clutch, or just simply skip the gear most afflicted.

I would try this first because it's a cheap fix and worth a shot. If not I would also assume the syncros. I used to drive a wrecker with a worn tranny and you would have to rev it and lightly float it in. The replaced some syncros and clutch then it worked like new.

I am going to take it in to OCH and have a flush done and either have MT90 or Ford oil put in depending on what I can source locally. Then see how it does.

Waste of money to have a 'flush' done on a manual.

It will adequately drain, and it has a magnetic drain plug.

Easy DIY. Just be sure you have the vehicle level, and that you remove the fill plug 'before' you remove the drain plug. That way if you have an issue with the fill plug you aren't sitting there with an empty trans.

Also make sure you can get the oil in the fill hole. I use a fluid transfer pump, kind of like a giant syringe with a bit of tube on the end, which you should be able to get at any auto parts store.
