I recently posted another thread on my non working 2013 back up camera. First thing I did was replace the camera. No fix. So I did more trouble shooting. Couldn't find the issue so started reviewing.

Come to find out the camera that I bought that said it was a direct replacement for my 86790-04010 is a 12 volt camera. My camera system is a 6 volt system. So no wonder changing the camera was no fix.

After searching I found most replacement cameras are 12 volt. I did see Camerasource offers a 6 volt camera for $185.00 but they don't show it on their site.

Anybody know of a source for a more reasonably priced 6 volt backup camera?

I imagine the 12 volt cameras would work with a 12 volt source such as tapping into the reverse lights but I'd rather just get a 6 volt camera if I could.

Did you ever complete this mod? I found this photo of the camera Evan Fisher supplied me when I purchased it. It is a Kool Vue brand. 4 pin (pos+ neg- and video + / -)IMG_1377.jpg

How does somebody determine if they have a 12v or 6v system? I have a 2014 non-JBL SR5 DCLB with back up cam at the stereo (not in the mirror). I'm replacing the stereo head unit with an aftermarket one but want to know if I need a voltage reducer when I wire in the RCA plug.

EDIT: partsouq.com says 86790-04020 is a direct replacment camera for my VIN. Can I assume that's 12v?

Have you looked for a voltage converter to wire inline with the camera to make the 12v work? Also, try https://www.camerasource.com/automo...ilter=6030&model_filter=6219&year_filter=6280

Just measure the voltage at the camera with the truck in reverse? It should be 6v if running on the stock stereo, but since you have to pull the wiring to replace the stereo, why not just double check the output to make sure when everything is apart?

6 volt is from the OEM head unit to the OEM camera. So if either the head unit or camera is retained, you have a 6 volt requirement somewhere (either the OEM camera will require 6v or, retaining the head unit, 6v will be output from the OEM head unit.)

If you are going to go with an aftermarket head unit then you will need a 12 volt camera or a 6 volt regulator to use the OEM camera.

Its confusing but just know if you are going to install an aftermarket head unit then buy a 12 volt camera made for aftermarket systems. If you are replacing a OEM camera to a OEM system then you would need a 6v camera.

So if you order the 86790-04020 From Toyota it will be a 6v camera.
If you get an aftermarket replacement you will have to read the specifications on voltage requirements for operation.

    Clear as mud lol

Easy enough to measure, but wanted to have all parts I need before I get in to it. Plus: my shop is cold and my desktop is right next to the wood stove. Much warmer to work here!

Hmm. From a bit of searching, it seems like there's two different OEM systems (6V and 12V) that have different connectors (6 pin and 4 pin). I'm going aftermarket headunit and I'd like to retain the OEM camera, so it might just be worth it to order a $12 voltage adaptor to have on hand before I tear into things.

That’s what I had to do since I did end up replacing the original head unit with an aftermarket Pioneer. I did that after I installed a 6v camera and used it on the OEM head unit for a while.
