Awesome 1st gen! Any updates?

 

Well the time has come I have officially started working on the runner. I got the frame all cut off and the new frame started. I also started getting the housing cleaned up and ready for the e locker. I originally was going to run a stock mini axle with the 4wu three link kit because i wanted to retain all toyota components. But living in az the only housing i could find were junk and after spending tons of time and to much money on 3 just mini housing I had to call Brian at 4wu and beg him to swap out the axle side brackets and order me a diamond front axle, which he tried telling me to do in the first place but I was dumb and told him I wouldn't need a diamond housing and I was on a budget. So Brian without any hesitation told me it would not be a problem and to just send back what I have. He is currently building my diamond axle side brackets and also have a diamond front housing being built. But anyway here are some pics I'm going to get back to work on the truck now before I go back to work I've been on night shift for the last 5 months and I have 2 more nights to go before I get back on day shift and ill be able to work on this truck more conveniently.







Threw a couple of pics of the motor mounts in there also they should turn out nice.

i need to drill my hi steer arms out for my steering but no one in town will do it so i may have to do it at work Thursday or Friday.

the next three days im going to try and build my pitman arm, get my box mounted, finish the motor mounts, start the trans mount, and hopefully start building my engine cage as long as mt shocks show up.

its looking like i will be having about 6-7" of up travel at about 24.5-25" of ride height and 35's not setting these numbers in stone as the rear-end isn't setup yet but i hope it stays under 26 frame height. have my wheel base set at 105" also.







had to notch the frame for the pan bar will also ahve to notch for the steering as well

pan i refuse to spend $200 on a pan lol so ill give this a shot. it was fun to build.

 

I moved my upper mount flush to the diff side and with a little grinding fits just right clears about 1/8". Not much more progress I wasn't feeling to well on my days off, but I did start to mount my shocks I feel like the shock mounting is going ot be a nightmare but i will just have to get creative. I did finally get my hi steer arms drilled at work today and I did manage to get my pitman arm built i think it turned out nice.

going to try and keep the frame as low as possible with max up travel trying for 24-5" height and 6-7" of up travel.

 

well on my two days off I made some major head way on the truck, oil pan is welded and leak tested, pickup tube and splash guard are fitted to new pan, re made my pass. motor mount to clear the axle, mocked up my steering box (still working on that) trying to get as much up travel as I can I'm going to move my upper link AGAIN to hopefully its final resting place, still need to notch frame to clear steering, FINALLY took the time to mount my trans and t-case i think it actually turned out really nice.

anyhow i took some better pics tonight shes going to be a big bitch.


My cross member connects to the back side of each link bracket over the top of the exhaust down and around the rear of the t-case and then you can see how I ran the trans mount off where the factory mount is and braced it with the two large lower trans bolts. It was pretty dark under there when I tacked the tabs don't judge they will come back off so I can weld them better.

Worked a shit ton of over time last week 7 12"s in a row AGAIN! so I haven"t had much truck time, but I had the last couple days off and managed to get out and still do a little work on the truck despite it still being 110*. Finished welding my steering links and got my steering box mounted. Also started notching the frame to clear steering at full pass. artic. bump still needs a little more but its close. I have a lot of time off this next month and as long as I don't get called into work I should have this bitch rolling.

This weekend will be focused on getting all of the odds and ends buttoned up. The list is long but I want to get all the little shit done so I can start on the shock mounts and engine cage and know that that's will be the final step.

 

Thanks zippo. Well I ran around this morning getting supplies and parts for the weekend and I came home to my fror tacoma brake adapters fiiiinallly here. I really stoked for this because I wasn't sure if this was all going to work but I'm glad it did so.... the front range off road brake adapter allows you to run tacoma rotors and calipers on ifs hubs with a straight axle. LC Engineering sells a bolt on "big brake" kit for tacomas that utilizes tundra caliper and rotors. The new rotors are 3/8's thinker then the ifs rotors and an 1 1/8 taller. Aside front just machining the od of the hub down, which fror says must be done to run the taco stuff I'm super stoked to have a rotor that just slides onto the front of the hub now instaed of having to disassemble the whole hub bearing assembly to swap rotors.

Hey man hows it going?! thanks man im working on the engine cage now im hoping to have it rolling this weekend im dieing to drive it again. i checked out you new truck its really nice! bummed you parted out your out truck but your new one im sure is like night and day with all the room you have in that thing.

 

Aesome work on all the fabrication you have done. It is obvious a lot of time and thought has gone into this build.

Can you take some pictures of the clearance of the IFS box? I know it should be as far forward as possible, but a picture would be great.

And I am also of the brake setup. I have trouble staying stopped at a steep angle on 33"s and factory brakes, well I also have a bigger MC but still.

 

Been busy working and doing other shit, I was also really sick for a week but the last couple of day's I got the fire back going on the runner. Spent a couple days just finishing up little bullshit like running new fuel and break lines and finish welding things, redid you trans cross member, welded all the axle side tabs on/gussets, bla bla. Was off the last couple of days and finally got started on the engine cage and I think its going to turn out nice. Moving the motor over a little bit to help clear the upper link mount has proven to be a pain in the ass now that I'm starting the engine cage, but its coming along nicely. I'm off all this weekend so hope fully I'll get this bitch on her own weight after sitting for 8 months almost.

the shock isn't going to be tabbed like this it will be plated across the two tubes the tab is there so I could check hood clearance.

 

Unfortunately I was not able to get as much work done on the runner as I wanted to due to having a little to much fun at a wedding. Also my buddy who I gave a ride to in my runner two years ago and has been hooked ever since is on Cherroke number two but on this one hes going all out with a full traction long are kit, deavers, fox's all the way around, and we will be building bumpers and stuff similar to mine. Anyway he brought his jeep down and I helped him out with getting his front shocks mounted.

The drivers side proved to be a big deal trying to get everything to clear but after moving things around and bouncing back and forth I finally have my locations in place for the shocks I just have to work on getting the brackets made. Hopefully Wednesday night ill actually get to set this thing on the ground.
