886 Backup light mod

Those are 120 Volt bulbs (house voltage) and won't work in your truck. You need 12 Volt bulbs.

Not sure about the 75 Watt either. If you read previous posts it looks like 50 Watt is pretty much the maximum you want to use based on wiring and heat. I'm not an electrical guy so hopefully someone else can chime in as to what 'dafuq' wattage and all those other numbers mean.

 

Wonder if this mod would work on a 01-04 reverse bulb (921 IIRC) looks like the same bulb as second gen

I already have superb reverse lighting (led 921s and flush mount led pods in my bumper) but I mainly just wanted to know for the sake of knowledge since people always ask how to get more light in the easiest most cost effective way. I used to drive a 99 taco and it has different reverse bulbs from my current 03 and i always thought this was only a 2nd gen thing. Now i know it also works for 01-04 first gens

 

I have 5% tint on the back window so I can't see shit so I have to rely on my camera and I run into the same problem of wondering if my backup lights are even on does anyone have pics of lights through a tinted back glass. Really want to do the mod. Thanks

 

Tried a bulb similar to these in 50 watt, and that melted the bulb holder a little.


I'm thinking of going this route, instead of the 886 mod. Should I go with a name brand bulb from Home Depot/Lowes??

Or are these ok to go with??

6 of these off brand are less than $6 in 35 watt.

I wouldn't run a 50w. There are a couple guys in this thread that have melted the housing's with 50w. I have 35w and have not had any issues. I bought the Philips GY6.35 35w. They claim to have the brightness of a 50w at 35w. They seem pretty damn bright.

 

Yup still running my 35watters without issue, but i def would not go any higher than 35watt halogen bulbs for melting problems.

Because its a cheap mod and it really helps if you have tinted windows..

This is why you don't want to use a 50 watt bulb. And I don't do any off road driving. It's never in reverse for more than 10 seconds or so.

Makes me wanna look at mine, not that i have 50w but with the dtrl melt and seeing this makes me nervous. Didnt a truck start on fire from a taillight fail like this?

I just put in a 35 watt

"Halogen BiPin 12V Volt Replacement Light B GY6.35"

And, boy, that bulb was hot to put in (even though 35w). Hopefully it's fine.
