Cut the bulb at "A" if you don't the bulbs won't stay in the pig tail Socket.

I love my 886 reverse light mod, I bought leds and they had less output then stock. No issue with melting or deforming my lights yet. About 10 months/11000 miles with them so far.

So my Canadian Tire didn't have 886's but they have 885's. The plug is straight instead of L shaped. The bulbs look the same, these should work right?

885 is the exact same thing as 886, but with the straight base. Will work just as well.

Just got done doing this mod. I had the LED cree bulbs in there. They were brighter than stock, but the beam pattern sucked. So it almost made it worse in a sense.

I ordered a pair of Philips 886 off ebay for $15 shipped. When I opened the package, it was obvious to me the best way would be to just use pliers and wiggle. On the post inside the socket, there's a crease.

Just grab it like this and wiggle back and forth. Do not do any side to side action. This will put pressure on the bulb end and may break it. When done correctly, you will just be apply pressure on this crease. After about 30 secs of wiggling, it'll break right off.

Now I wasn't quite sure if it would fit into the light socket, since the "blades" are so thin. Only way to know was to try it out. And FFFUUUU, they are too thin. Don't know how OP had his bulb secured.

So the next step was to fold the blade onto it self to increase the thickness of it. I didn't have my camera when I was doing this, but carefully fold it each side in half. On the blade, you will have the skinny bulb filament welded on to it. It goes about halfway down the "blade". Perfect spot to perform the fold.

I just used my needlenose and another set of pliers. Worked out great. Tight solid fit. Lights appear to work great. Very bright.

Don't know if polarity is an issue. I just jammed them in place.

I plan on doing this soon. Tired of not being able to see. But my question is, no ill effects from this, for any of you guys that have done it? Obviously, wouldn't be on long enough to get hot enough to melt anything, but are the wires ok to handle the upped wattage of the bulb?

I'm getting my lazy ass out of the house right now, buy some bulbs & do this mod. I've been running some pricey $40 LED reverse bulbs but the light spread is too narrow. Didn't solve my problem. Hopefully this cheap mod will. Thanks TW!

Success finally! I broke several bulbs in the process :annoyed:
My 1st attempt was with a dremel. Broke a bulb right away. My 2nd attempt was with pliers. I cannot see how this method works :notsure:. Either the bulb shatters or the wire soldered to the flat blade breaks loose. Broke 2 more bulbs this way. My 3rd attempt was back to a dremel. This time I used a different cut-off wheel & that worked. Now I had to bend the flat metal connectors. That was tough because they are short & very stiff. Impossible to use 2 pliers. Plus the glass bulb is very delicate. During this process, I was beginning to have doubts whether this can be done without breaking another bulb. If so, this would be my last attempt. I clamped the metal leads to a vise & "carefully" pushed down on them with a screwdriver. Finally got enough of a bend to fit securely in place in the light connector. What a relief :yay:. This mod felt like I was diffusing a bomb.

I used 38w 894's instead of 50w 886's. I noticed bulbs get hot quickly & I'm a little worried about overloading the truck wiring. I'm afraid truck may catch fire & blow up . I'll keep a close watch on these bulbs. Hopefully no harm to my baby.

Has anyone had problems with this mod? Please let us know.

What brand of bulb did you use? I was also planning on going the 894 route in hopes of creating less heat.
