Fifty percent done. I ran out of bulbs. The one that is in there, is wedged in with the broken piece of flat metal. The other bulb just shattered, almost immediately. Real happy with just one done. Should I get rid of the one that is working due to the wedge issue? Thanks. Will probably just get from CSJumper. I just was cleaning basement and work area and found some 880's. No real lost money as I did not even know I had them. Thanks for the mod and time killer.

I finally did this yesterday with the 866 bulbs. I had been skeptical if they would make much of a difference but it sure does. The backup camera is now usable at night where before it was too dark to do make much out on the screen.

The one thing that I noticed is that the bulb is wider than wanted to fit securely in the plug. In fact one vibrated out after a short drive. I was having a hard time getting it to secure until I accidentally broke off just a tiny piece of the glass on the bottom of the bulb. Then it fit right down in the plug nice and snug.

I didn't bother trying to break off the light with the flat blades still attached. I just broke the wire loose from the blades and folded the wire over onto itself and it made a nice connection in the plug.

    Very well worth the time!

Has anybody tried to use this mod as a strobe setup? I was thinking of doing this in conjunction with a Feniex controller http://www.feniex.com/product.php?prod_id=274
    For additional visability.

What do ya'll think......will it work?

I did this with a philips 894 bulb, very easy. I separated the prongs by wiggling it back and forth with pliers, and I did have to fold those prongs over on themselves to get a snug fit, although one of the lights can wiggle a little back and forth, but not out. They looked brighter, I will update if I notice a difference with the back up camera tonight.

I did the 894 myself and they are much brighter. I used a soldering gun and added some solder to the ends of the metal prongs, really snug fit.

I've had my 894's in for a while now, and for some odd reason I get a big smile on my face every time I back up at night.

so the 894's are a lot brighter than the 886 or just the oem?

894s are not as bright as the 886's, as they are 38w, compared to 50w. A bit safer for the wiring, B/U light switch, and lenses IMHO, and still plenty bright, way better than OEM.

Correct. For Sylvania bulbs at least; the differences between the three bulbs are:

Stock 921 bulb is 18 watt, 264 lumens
    894 bulb is 37.5 watt, 942 lumens (3.6 x brighter)
    886 bulb is 50 watt, 1257 lumens (4.8 x brighter)

Another thing to consider when buying the 8XX bulbs is to avoid the black tip bulbs, or scrape off the black coating if you can. Since most of these 8XX bulbs are for fog lamps, the black tip reduces the glare for oncoming drivers. As reverse lights, we want the light to go everywhere. The reflector is designed to do that, but the black tip may, or may not, affect the luminosity.

Here are some specs taken from the GE website; life expectancy may vary among manufactures.

Watts - Lumens - Life Expectancy - Bulb
    50------1257-----200 hours--------885, 886,
50------1194-----400 hours--------887. 888 (advertised as a low Voltage design? and expensive)
    38-------942-----200 hours--------893, 894, 896
    38-------754-----200 hours--------898, 899
    27-------540-----300 hours--------880, 881, 889, 890
    18-----264/297---500-1400 hours--921 (OEM)

High performance versions (ie NightHawk, Silverstar, Xtreme, etc...) may reduce life expectancy by 50% or so.

OEM 921 Philips is 1000 hrs -SilverStar is 175hrs! The NightHawk is 1400 hrs. Check the manufacure's website for specs.

Did this today. Ended up having to use 894 cause auto zone didn't carry 886. Dremel and bend and install. Looking forward to seeing what they look like tonight.

I only had to break one bulb to realize I shouldn't be messing with the bulb I should modify the socket. Bent the little tabs in, plugged in the bulb, snug fit enuff said. I stepped out side of the box and it worked. Hope this helps.

Don't know how I missed this post when I did mine tonight. One went perfectly smooth and the second bulb broke right away. Will do your method tomorrow when I pick up a new bulb.

On another note, these bulbs are bright as fuxk.

Pictures would help make this more useful. I did the 894's and it is much brighter. Apparently not a problem, but going to 50 watts was more than I was willing to chance on the electrical system.

If you don't draw blood, you're doing it wrong!
Damn, how have I not done this yet?!?!?

I was ready to pull the trigger on some 9w CREE LEDs with a 440 Lumen output, but I was worried about visibility at close range since the LED "projector lens" throws the beam further from the truck than a normal halogen flood pattern.

I recently tinted my LED tailights, and taped off the "clear" back-up light area to maintain full light output. I also have 10% tint on front windows, a canopy with tinted windows, and the back-up camera, so the increased output will definitely help me out while on the trails at night. So excited to get this mod done! :D

I found some generic bulbs for super cheap @ lightexports.com. Total was $6.80 shipped for both bulbs.

They seem to have whatever bulbs you want: 880, 894, 886, 887, 888 etc.

I opted for 886, since the specs were the same as 887/888. There was no indication that lifespan or lumen output was different.

I will post before/after pics when I get them installed.

I just completed this mod so we will see if there is a difference tonight. I used the 885 50W bulb and a hacksaw. No problems. Hope it makes a true difference, with tinted windows I can't see anything at night.
