I have a 1991 Hilux which ran great until the gasket blew and my partner drove it with a blown gasket. That destroyed the motor.

I replaced it with a 1996 Tacoma and I'm not sure what to do with my Hilux. Do you think it's worth it to have the motor replaced before selling it? Or just sell it as is?

How the frame and body? You could part it out or sell as is. I may be interested in some parts if is in good shape.

The frame and body are in great shape. It was a fantastic truck until the gasket blew and my ex tried to drive it home.

It’s worthless. I wouldn’t bother fixing it. I’ll help you out and take it off your hands so you don’t have to deal with it.

What makes the engine destroyed out of curiosity? And why won't a new head gasket fix it?

The V6 for that year has head cracking problems. The engine may have hydrauliced from pulling in coolant. They were also pretty underpowered and got poor mileage. We used to have a 91 4Runner that had the same issue. I don’t think the engine is likely worth rebuilding if it had a catastrophic failure. You might check with a couple of remanufacturers if you are changing the engine yourself and you think the core is usable. If you are paying someone else to do it all, I think you will have more into it than it’s worth. The only way it would make sense is if you are going to drive it for the next 4 or 5 years.
Another idea would be the use of a later V6 which are good engines. I’m sure the swap would have its own set of challenges.

    Where are you located?

The 3.slow in your truck is arguably the worst motor toyota put in a truck. I have owned 3 of them and have done headgaskets and heads on 2 of them and a 3.4 swap on the 3rd. You will pay more than its worth for a motor and to have someone swap it. When people talk aboit the crazy market on old toyota trucks they really mean anything powered by a 20r/22r/22re.

I don't have the skills to fix it myself. So from these replies it sounds like it wouldn't be worth paying someone to fix it. Yes?

If you were going to drive it for several more years it might be depending on the rebuild cost. If you are going to flip it, no, cut your losses. Also consider your trans and axels will also need rebuilding at some point. It may just nickel and dime you. You have to consider the cost to fix and operate it vs the cost to replace.

You can get 5k all day for that with the blown motor. I just a quick search. 6 91s 100k -175k miles all v6s. $13k-20k!! Crazy. If it’s as good a shape as you say it is. I’d drop 5-6k in a motor into it.

Technically it’s not a Hilux as they have never been available in the U.S. But if you have the cash it might be worth fixing. Could do a SAS and make an awesome project truck too.

If not a Hilux, what would you call it? Since it's not technically a Tacoma either.

Really? $5k even with a blown motor? I had hoped for something like that, but thought it was wishful thinking.
I do live in an expensive area of the country, so maybe...

Back then it was just called the Toyota Pickup I believe. There was also the T100, but I believe that was different. I just wasn't sure if you imported a Hilux or were from elsewhere other than the US.
