I have a 1995 2.7L 4x4 auto trans. 3-speed w/OD. I don't know transmission #. When I start moving in drive (only when engine cold) at very low speed below 20 mph there is a vibration and a metal to metal grinding noise. The vibration is like running over curb warning bumps but steering is not effected. When I down shift to 2nd the vibration and noise temporarily stop and completely goes away as I increase speed back into drive. Does not occur after engine and transmission warm up. Any suggestions for DIY fix?

How many miles on the truck/trans? When's the last time you had it serviced (flushed or drain and fill?)

btw, if it's long overdue for a service then don't flush it, a drain/fill is the way to go.

The truck has 400,000 miles but the trans was completely rebuilt about 50,000 miles ago. Has never been drained or flushed. I appreciate your suggestion to drain/fill. Amazing the ball joints etc are still in good shape. Had to replace all ball joints and tie rods on 2005 Tundra at 300,000 miles. I will drain/fill and report back.

Good call, I just greased the joints on my driveshaft(s) this afternoon and it greatly reduced the 'clunky' feeling I was having in them, especially in-between shifting gears.
