    Welcome to TW!
    Sorry, I don't own a 4 wheel drive so I can't help much...

Did it work when you test drove it?
Did you buy it from a private or from a dealer? if so did it come with a 30 day warranty???
Can you give any more detail about "not go in 4wheel drive"?

Hopefully everything will work out for you! :)

did you try rolling the truck forwards or backwards? if the 4x4 system was never used it may be all seized up now.

That makes me feel:   :smash: :frusty:
That is frustating... Unless he never used the 4X4 himself he would have known it was out! That is dissapointing (among other words and emotions possible) that he would sell it to you without telling him about it.
As I see it you have a few options. You could talk to him about it and try return the truck for your money, have him pay for the selenoid and switch to be replaced, or find some sort of legal help. I'm no lawyer... but from what I remember in my college business law class there isn't a lot that you could do, depending on if you guys wrote anything down and signed them...
I'll ask around people I know if there is any legal recourse you could take... In the mean time good luck talking to your 'friend'.

Dude, it’s your fault. The key words are; “Buyer Beware” no matter who the seller is  . If he’s a good friend, I’m sure you can work things out. Good luck.

Unfortunately have to agree with TheMaster on the buying thing though one thing about 1st gens if the 4wd hasn't been used in awhile: Put in 4H, release the clutch, it won't go anywhere, try rolling in 1st gear with 4wd off, clutch it and see if it will slip into 4H.
Instead of the manual locking hubs it's how you get the hubs to lock and diff to lock in. Worth a shot to see if you lost the diff case or not.
