A/C Compressor Clutch

Today was the first warm day of the year and I turned on the a/c and it was not blowing any cold air. I can recall smelling burning rubber a couple times this winter and for a while every time I started the truck the a/c light would be blinking but eventually that stopped.
I checked some things today, swapped the relay with another and confirmed that was not the problem then noticed this.


You can see the rubber bunched up/ out of place on the bottom.

Can just the clutch be replaced? If so where can I get one? Checked at napa and only the whole compressor with clutch can be bought, about $500 for a refurbished one or close to $1000 for a new one plus whatever it would cost for recharging the refrigerant afterwards.

I bought the truck last fall used from a dealer, 2014 TRD Off Road 37,000 Km on it when I bought it and about 50,000 Km on it now. Seems ridiculous that the A/C Clutch would fail within 50,000 KM not happy about this at all.

Any chance it's still under warranty? It's only 4 years old and has low mileage.

I believe I read that just the clutch can be replaced but I don't have the thread bookmarked.


My compressor went out on my 2009 last summer and I changed it out.

You'll need a manifold gauge set and a vacuum pump if you go that route.

Nope it's out of warranty, like b_r_o suggested above I done some searching and it can be replaced and found some listings on ebay out of the U.S. where I could get one for around $200 with shipping. I'm going to talk to the dealership I bought it from and see if they'll do anything for me, it was october when I bought it with the warm weather long gone so I haven't really even used the A/C. They're a 10 hr drive from me so even if they just sent me the part I'd be happy.

 

Doesn't look like too bad of a job with the fan removed.

 

I am working to have the same issue fixed right now. Got quoted from Toyota today... they want 1500 for oem parts (compressor and clutch) or 1000 for an aftermarket install. Apparently you can buy a compressor/clutch together...200 on Amazon....my local shop told me 2hrs Labor for the instal...that’ll definitely be cheaper than the stealership

What's your mileage? I've never had issues with a/c on anything else I've owned, had a focus with 260,000 on it never a problem with it and I've got 23yr old sports car with ice cold a/c. Hopefully this is not something that will turn up every 50,000 I plan on keeping the truck for a long time.

It’s just crazy what the dealer will charge... my abs light is intermittently on... and it’s because of a slightly broken cable that need to be mended...they said they can’t repair it and told me i need a new harness for then engine bay...quote = 3300

 

Clutch hub. Order the clutch hub from ebay for 50 bucks. Exactly the same thing happened to me 3 weeks ago and that 50 dollar part and 15 minute fix resolved the problem. The rubber on the hub fails. Try it!
