So the OEM harness is not cut, get a matched pair. Then remove the purple wire from the EA1 plug. (position 3) [these are non-sealed pins]
It can be left on top or done underneath.

There's a 2015 TSB that addresses the addition of a EFan.

Not sure if anyone from this thread is still around but... Are all gen 2 Tacomas having this issue? My 2009 blows air that are barely cold at all when stopped. Once I get up to speed, the air cools a lot more. Is that normal for all gen 2s? Is this mod the only fix for that?

My 2013 is the same. I would still check your freon, but mine has never been cold at a standstill. Luckily i am always moving. Our engine cooling is rather good, so you fan doesnt spin that often. Electric fans i bet would make a good bit of difference. But what i gathered reading a few threads is 2 fans was best and i think flat blades, if i remember right... The 3rd gens had a TSB to add electric fans, for this same reason, but we never got one for the 2nd gens. Saw another guy bypassing all the fancy wiring and just did a switch he would hit when he was in stop and go traffic. It still cut power when key was switched off, so wouldnt run battery dead. He seemed happy with that.

Of course first check for proper A/C charge, a few ounces low makes a big difference. Then next time stopped in traffic just put the truck in neutral and increase rpm's a tad to increase airflow over both the radiator and A/C condenser. Works for me.

If the fan clutch is engaged. Our coolant systems are pretty good, so a lot of time its not engaged, which is why the 3rd gens got the TSB. I may be wrong, going off shotty memory.

Thanks! I have 190,000 miles on my 09. It probably needs to be recharged anyways. I'll do that soon and see if it helps.

it only needs recharging if there’s a leak. The freon doesn’t just walk off the job. Toyota did you the favor of adding green dye to it. If it’s low, find the leak, fix it and then recharge.

once you’ve ensured the system is operating correctly as designed, then you can upgrade with fans if you still feel the need

So if there is no leak, you never run out of the stuff? I just assumed they all need to be recharged every so often.

Some leak a little, some a lot, some never leak. It's a mystery of the universe. ;)
Those itty bitty leaks can be damn near impossible to find.

Mine gets low every year or two. Probably a bad seal, o-ring, or hole in my line from my bumper. But a $30 can keeps me good for a year or two. I am not tearing into a system for something a $30 can fixes for that long. When i have to add it every week or month, then i will look into tearing into it.

I am also pretty sure my steel bumper rubbed a hole in on of the lines, before i notched it. But i am lazy and patched it a couple years ago. If it keeps taking a year or two, i am good.

Great write up! My Mexico-built 2007 TRD with towing package has been doing the same since I bought it practically new. I will likely install a condenser fan somewhere after I confirm pressures are correct.

More airflow, in normally low airflow situations.

I have two SPAL 14" or 16" fans. Pretty sure 16"

They were installed long ago where they both came on 100% with a thermo-switch in the thermostat manifold. I recently made one come on with the Fan speed knob.

They cool the engine extremely well. Including through an intercooler and condenser.

Only for stop and go traffic. Likely wont see any benefit on highway.
