Are you talking about the cabin air filter, if so it is inside of the glove box, should be in the owners manual.

No, I can find that under the glove compartment. I'm looking for this.

I see, what does that do, and is it a routine maintenance item? Are you having A/C problems.

It's just a part the dealership wanted to charge me for replacement during routine inspection. I figured I could do it myself while I check the other filters. I'm sure its nothing critical. My A/C seems pretty good, so prob. a waste of time, but I thought for $3 it may be worth replacing.

HA ! No, that's a cheap easy up sell item that most won't question because it is cheap. But to actually change out ( and I doubt they ever do ) you have the discharge the AC system as it is in on of the lines at the evaporator expansion valve

Things are not always what they seem at the stealership.....

Right, I had a feeling it was part of the line system. I won't worry about it. Thanks for confirming.

Actually, I just moved to Tampa, FL. Called Stadium Toyota.
But for what its worth, I had good luck at Fred Anderson. They were great for some critical things. If u have a chance, check out the thread for "Secondary Air Injection Pump / Filter.
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/secondary-air-injection-system-p2440-and-p2442.370792/
People are getting shafted for over $2000 for a faulty part, and Fred Anderson did the whole job under warranty for $0.

thats actually good to know, i've yet to take any of my Toyotas back to dealer after purchase, except for recall stuff that actually mattered (Camry debacle), specifically because i was a tech in a GM dealership and saw stuff like this all the time.

Yup, I can see that and understand. The only reason I go to the dealership (other than that Sec. Air Intake), is because I usually can get my oil changed for $16, and its worth the time.

I had a compressor fail and would like to service the AC. Is it possible to just clean out this filter and reuse it since it’s mesh, or does it have to be replaced?

Replace it. It is cheap and the chance of getting it clean after a compressor failure is slim and none. Also make sure all the lines are flushed clean and the condenser dryer are replaced.

Here are some more pictures for you. Don't forget the filter in the tube.

There is not a separate dryer on the 2nd Gen it is integral to the condenser itself. No way to service or replace the dryer without replacing the entire condenser for $$

I know. That is why I said Condenser Dryer instead of Condenser and Dryer...

If my filter looks like the one above is it likely that my compressor is shot?

Does it? I would be worried. Also, too often when a compressor lets go junk goes backwards up the line from the evaporator. Then it gets real ugly and $$$$. I have been advocating fine screens be placed on that line at the compressor manifold.
