With a filter that looks like that and you got the dash out I would definitely replace the evaporator and include a new thermistor.

I would probably also replace the heater core but that is just me because removing the dash is such a pain and one of the most unpleasant jobs I have done on a Taco, and I have done it twice. Moreover, both the high-side line and suction line need flushed. And don't be surprised if the inside of the condenser is also full of junk and needs flushed.

    Lucky you. Sorry

thinking of replacing the filter and drier as maintenance during a recharge

    good idea?

    cheap enough, filter is $2.74
    drier $13.51

The filter drier is built into the condenser at least on the second generation Tacoma. I don't think it is serviceble as a separate unit.

that filter shouldn't even get clogged enough to need replacement unless the compressor is shredding metal off. (a little bit of metal comes off when brand new but not enough to clog that filter)

that screen should only need replacement if the compressor fails, then you would discharge the lines, replace compressor, flush lunes, chang filter and orings, then re fill.

Ok so that filter is in the line not the evaporator

these are typically two separate components, with an expansion valve being where lines meet the firewall
and tube/filter being inline with one of the lines at a hex fitting, located somewhere else usually in the engine bay

Thanks man I found one! I couldn’t find it
because Toyota calls it a refrigerant filter and not an orifice tube. Yay for consistency
