I will try to open the cover and see the connection in 2002.

like I said, it's highly doubtful you'd notice any difference in the MPGs... it's a very minor power draw.

My post was made "tounge in cheek" glad you took it that way. The mod linked in this thread looks very interesting and I will probably do it.

I was able to fix the issues simply by breaking the clips... and turn right ( more than the where defrost location)

When I had my 06 tundra I did the exact same thing. Took off the cover where the knob are and unplugged the two pin plug.
I work nights and it sucks when I would get off from work and walk up to a popsicle with a frozen windshield.
The most recent solution is to use windshield wiper fluid with de-icing additive, a plastic ice scraper for the really thick ice and a heavier jacket. I couldn't find that fluid in California for years until I found it on Amazon for like $4 a gallon shipped one day. I bought a couple cases :D

From my understanding it is recommended to run AC from time to time even in winter. Actually nobody would run AC in winter (I mean real winters with sub-zero temperatures, not California stye) unless for blowing dry air in defrost mode. So the built-in feature of auto AC-on when in defrost position helps with that periodic use of AC. When it is disabled you will have to remember to use AC from time to time.

I'm not saying this mod is wrong - it just gives you more control with more responsibility for your actions. My truck is like that - the vent position direct the air, the AC switch turns AC - both functions separate.

In my 2012 4Runner the AC comes on automatically when I switch air to defrost position, but probably Toyota people were pissed for owners breaking the tab in the air control knob (like you did :)) and in that truck I can turn off AC even in defrost mode just by pressing the AC switch.

I forgot that your supposed to run it from time to time.
One of my friends is ASE certified in automotive ac systems and he told me this years ago too. Keeps the seals lubed and such
