A/C - post your alternative cooling setups

    The air conditioner went bad. Big time. Squealed about as loud as the horn.
    The dealer says metal fragments likely are embedded in the system.
    Cost to repair: close to $3000 CDN.
    So, that's a big pill to swallow. Too big. Living on the west coast of Canada, it only reaches +30C (85F) a few days a year. But even +20C(70F) and sunny can get warm in the cab.

    Has anyone come up with some alternatives?
    Anybody rigged up some nice looking fans on the dash or elsewhere?

    There is an actual mini-compressor portable unit like Zero Breeze which would need to have the hot air outlet vented to outside. Pricy too, about 1/2 the cost. Not interested in those water-based evaporation ones as they just swamp you out. Red-neck duct-tape a household A/C unit in the passenger window?

    Rain deflectors/vent visors and leave the windows cracked when it rains.
    Any other time, roll them down.

    It is 95 here today. I work outside a lot, so I don’t use the AC in my truck much.
    I guess maybe I am used to it:confused:

    Fix the A/C or roll the windows down is the best I got for ya. That’s ask I’ve ever done.

    Find an independent shop instead of taking it to the dealer for repairs or just roll down the windows :notsure:

    My AC System had the same thing around 2017.
    My timing belt was due for a replacement so I replaced that along with my entire AC system at the same time.

    From what I remember the AC parts were around $700 plus I paid a shop about $135 to evacutate the refrigerant before I did the work and then to pull a vacuum overnight to remove any moisture and check for leaks and then to recharge it. So total about $835 for a whole new AC System.

    From what I recall the timing belt, all the things that go along with that and the AC system took about 13 hours with the help of a friend.

    It's been working great for about 5 years now.

    Looks like there are some guys on YouTube building portable ac out of an ice chest a small 12 volt fan and some ductwork. You could power the fan with a little one amp solar panel. No idea if it would work or how long the ice would last but looks like a fun little project.
