Thinking the Tacoma. I don't have the rear locker wired or a rear bumper for the 4runner. I don't want to tear the cover off for a while.

In the mad dash that is Moab prep, I'm building my front bumper for the Tacoma. It is a Rentlentless Fab DIY kit. I had to chop the frame and add end caps. I performed the build on the vehicle with just tacks.

Got both sides tacked up tonight. I did a little bench welding. Hope to finish the welding and grinding tomorrow.

Nice! Looks like I will still be prepping into next weekend just a day before we leave. So glad to see I am not the only one! Let me know if you want that winch to throw in there.

    looking good Brian!

Why'd you have to chop the frame?
Or is that just how the bumper is designed.

The 1st gen Tacoma had a couple frame changes throughout the years. From what I understand, 95.5 to 97 and 2001 to 2004 are the same. The 98 to 2000 are the bastard childern with the same frame as the front of the 3rd gen 4runner.

If I had an earlier or later frame, no mods would be needed I guess.

So you're saying they kept trying to get the first gens right and finally said "Screw it, let's start over and do it right with a 2nd gen" ?

Naw, the 1st gen was too modest. While it was perfection out of the box, they tried improvements only to realize they were changing nothing other then looks.

The 1st gen is like the Chuck Norris of trucks, lots of tough in a small package. While the 2nd gen is more like Randy "the macho man" Savage, looks cool but is really trying too hard for attention.

Well, hard work was done yesterday. I feel for all of those fabricator apprentices out there. My arms are jello today after the 3 hours of grinding. It took a total of 14 hours of fitting, welding and grinding to get to this point. I'll test fit the winch on Monday, then paint. I'm not sure what I'm doing for turns yet, might just do the 2" round trailer amber LED.

I have 30 minutes to kill while waiting for the 1st top coat. 2 coats of primer so far. I think I might have to buy a can of paint, not spray can, to paint the point under the winch. Those holes are not quite big enough to spray inside there.

Stayed late the last couple nights and hammered the bumper out. It is mounted with the winch. The extra brackets that go to the body mounts don't fit. The look to be made for a 2" body lift. I don't think there is enough material to open up the holes.

I might be building a bed rack before Moab (6 days). There is a chance of me getting a used ARB Simpson 3. Hope I know soon.

Nice work, look forward to checking it out in Moab. I feel you on the grinding, painful to do for hours, both mentally and physically.

Well, I found a matching full sized spare. No matching wheel yet but I'm looking so I can start a 5 tire rotation. My plate is a little closer to the bigger tire then I thought.

I also added another project before Moab. I just picked up an ARB Simpson 3 with annex. I need to build some quick bed rack setup. I'm not sure what I'm building yet.

My simple bed rack is not going to be flat. It would just be too low for the RTT. 12" legs, 48" on the top bars, 60" at the bed sides.

I didn't get any cross bracing in. I ran out of wire on the last weld. It takes a big spool (10lbs) to build a Relentless Fab DIY bumper and a bed rack, I might have built a set of sliders too.

Tacoma, the way it sits without gear or the RTT comes in at 4360lbs including fat driver. Still below GVWR at 5100lbs. That being said, at the current weight it feels like a wet noodle on the road. The rear feels the worst at this point. I'm going to try and OldBret a pack in the next week or so, if that fails an OME Dakar set will be ordered. Loaded it sits very low in the rear. If you have a 1st gen, could you get me an axle to frame measurement in the rear, and what height lift you think you have.
