I have a 2007 4cyl Access Cab (SR5 Prerunner). Shifting is fine, but it is not as smooth as some of the import cars. I had a Nissan before this truck and shifting was silky smooth.

I've also driven a manual Chevy S10 (HORRIBLE Shifting!).

I'd say the Tacoma is pretty good considering it is a pretty big truck. I would agree that Toyota could put a little more effort into the feel of the manual transmission, but they are pretty darn near bullet proof. Even with the 4 cyl mated to a manual transmission you can pull stuff, do a little off roading (with the Prerunner). Gas mileage for me is about 23 typical (I also have the suspension TSB...so my truck sits a bit higher).

Go drive the comparable Ford/ Chevy/ Dodge/ Nissan in a manual transmission. I think you will find the Tacoma is still the better bet.
