Update 5/26/2020: I used a A750F from a 2012 Toyota 4runner as a replacement to my 2006 A750F. Install and fitment is perfect with no major or even minor modifications needed. It bolts right up. I took a chance after being told that only a A750F from 05-07 tacomas would work in my 2006 v6/auto Tacoma. So if you're reading this and needing a replacement transmission I can comfortably say ANY A750F will work despite what junkyards or the dealer tells you. Even with the Toyota part number change throughout 2005-2015.

Is an A750F from a 2006 the same as an A750F from a 2012? Or are there some minor changes that may need addressing to complete the swap? My current tranny in my 06 seems to be tits up at 158k, and I've found one from a 2012 with 25k on it. Just wanting to make sure it will be a direct swap.

    TIA

Ok, going to revive this as I am currently exploring my options for a transmission replacement on my 06 4x4 tacoma at 176k now.. I come from the old first gen mini trucks where parts are widely interchangeable from the 80's on into the 90's on Toyota trucks.

I'm currently trying to find the differences in the a750f Toyota equipped the Tacoma with. I'll start with the part numbers.

These are pulled from Toyotas own parts database.

    350100402084
    From 200409 to 200708.

    350100404084
    From 200708 to 200805.
    From 200805 to 201109.

    350100408084
    From 201208 to 201508.

The last 2 numbers in the year I'm assuming are the month in which changes where made. Now, given the part number changes you'd expect there was a revision along the way. In my research, I have yet to find what changed or why Toyota changed the part number for certain years on the A750F. Looking through Toyotas parts database, I have yet to find an internal part of this transmission that is year specific. Even the master rebuild kits, solenoids and wiring harness and valve body part numbers interchange through the 3 different part numbers Toyota lists for the A750F from 2005-2015.

So what gives? This transmission was offered in 4.7L 4x4 tundras, all 4x4 1grfe's in the 4runner, the 4.7L 4x4 4runner, certain 4x4 FJ cruisers along with the sequoias. Is it something in the ECU that determines what a750f part number can be used on certain years? If so can the ECU be reflashed to accept a newer a750f? Or swap the TCM from the respective A750F year?

I'm noticing that most of not all reman a750f's I'm looking at require a reflash. So that may be the catch for interchanging this transmission to other years.

@gearcruncher, sorry to keep tagging you, am I chasing my tail on this?

Here is my two cents: i would say you're fine with putting in the trans from a newer truck. when i converted my pre-runner to 4x4 and manual I put in a trans from and FJ Cruiser with no problems. granted that is a manual. I did come across some info that the A750F from a tundra has the connectors in different locations. So as long as it comes from a tacoma you should be good. make sure the retailer is willing to take returns just in case. as far as i know the engine computer controls the trans on the tacomas, possibly other toyota models as well.

    Hi Robert .
Not positive on the changes between the 3 different fitment categories .
I will find a solid answer and get back to you .
I do know that the 2012 and up trucks have had mutliple flash updates for a variety of problems and I beleive the checkballls in the valve body have also moved around over the years . They are year specific because they communicate with a year specific ecm and I cant say that a 2012 will work in a 2006 application because the ecm also controls engine function .
Valve bodies are different between the 3 fitment categories

You need to find a transmission from a 2005 -2007 with low mileage .
They are not an expensive transmission to source and there are many out there .
If the A750F was a poorly desinged transmission , you would have a hard time finding one but for the most part , they are very reliable
Follow your door tag to a T even if that 2012 trans is appealing to you , you are going to create extra grief trying to make it work

Well, this weekend I'm taking the plunge on a transmission from a 2015 despite what I've been told. It seems I may have found the way to make it work. The transmission needs to be initialized with my ECU in order for it to recognize it and control the behavior of it. It just didn't make sense to me that I could order a reman A750F from anywhere and it would work, despite not being from a 05/06/07 Tacoma. That reman a750f could have at one time been in a tundra or what ever model or year, it doesn't really matter where it comes from, it needs to be initialized to my ECU.

When you first spoke about using any year of the A750 series in your 2006 , I actually went to ATSG and asked what changes were made between the 3 different fitments . I even went to TRNI and asked ?
    https://www.atsg.us/atsg/
    http://www.trannybuilder.com/

I hate to say it but they both came back saying the same thing as I previously posted .
You need to use the Transmission fitment by year :
    2005-2007,
    2008-2011,
    2012+

They thought I was the trans guy trying to make this work and told me not to be a magician hehehe

With this said , transmission shops follow this fitment by year and never steer away from it .
That being said , you are plowing new ground for Tacoma World if you manage to get a 2015 transmission to function in a 2006 application
I am not saying that the transmission will not fit behind your motor , it will bolt up just fine .
I would hate to see you go through all the work and end up with greif as an end result .
The initialization procedure you have posted above is performed on every truck during an overhaul . Sometimes that same initialization is used after a small repair is made to your factory transmission and even some times after a transmission service . Any updates performed " flashes to the ECM " and the truck needs the initialization procedure performed .
Post your results , I will be happy to hear everything works fine

I will definitely keep you posted. Im planning on putting a shift kit in it before install, but not sure if I'm getting ahead of myself and will be wasted if it doesn't work. I'm getting the transmission, torque converter and flex plate for $1000. No transfer case.

This is the potential donor here.

@gearcruncher with the difference in solenoids, is it just the values that the TCM reads that would change? They would still perform the same function correct? Wouldn't the TCM be able to be reprogrammed with the newer values from a corresponding TCM of that year? It looks like the solenoids are just bigger than the older ones in the most recent a750's?

I will be having my ECU tuned and was thinking the tuner could use the values from the corresponding TCM and write them to my TCM.

I believe all the resistance values for the shift solenoids are the same from 2003 straight through until 2015 .
That being said , you shouldnt have to make changes to the TCM for shift solenoid operation

What I can tell you is that the later transmissions utilize the converter clutch much more than the earlier transmissions through pulse width modulation of the SLU solenoid . This is why its imperative to use a TCM out of a 2015 truck that matches your 2015 transmission
I dont think " Tuners " will ever be capable of re-writing pulse width modulation .
A tuner may be able to turn the converter on and off though . It will cost you all kinds of gas and some substancial heat , but it will solve the converter problem if you plan to keep the 2006 TCM in your truck and attempt to match it with the 2015 transmission .
For the record , I would never ever tell anyone to try this .
As mentioned earlier , you are trying something here that as far as I know , has never been attempted .
I can only post what I know and will try and assist the best I can , but some of the issues that are going to pop up will be with programming .
Any chance you can get the TCM out of that 2015 ? that would make life a little easier for the transmission swap , however , I have no clue how a 2006 engine would re-act to a 2015 computer

I'll have to ask the seller if he still has. It, he was parting out the whole truck. On a side note, my CWL went off and the 2716 code is gone from the ECU. Not pending or stored in the ECU, it's actually gone as if the ECU no longer detects an issue with the solenoid. Something's weird. I have a feeling the code won't be gone for long.

Putting the swap on hold for now, while I do more research and wait for the CEL code to come back.

Update on this, I've found a a750f from a 2012 t4r with 80k minus the tcase for $150!!! At that price I'll take the gamble and :fingerscrossed: for positive outcome. Still currently driving my truck as is, getting tired of my dash being lit up like a christmas tree tho.

Still in progress. I've been busy with work and kid stuff and my current transmission is still working for the time being. I haven't had much time to concentrate on this project lately. Still looking for the middle section of the trans that mates the tcase and trans together. Didn't realize it was missing till I did more research.

I've got it on the stand and recieved the new replacement solenoid harness. That's about it.

Found some spare time tonight to swap the solenoid harness and replace the filter. Since it's on the stand now, I was able to rotate the transmission 180° and do this task head on, instead of on my head. No shift kit for now, just a basic filter/pan gasket job and replacing the broken harness. Sometime in the near future I'll get the twin stick kit and disassemble the tcase for that install.

Attached are pics showing the filter removed and routing of the harness for removal/reinstallation. Using a small tipped flathead and gently depressing the retaining clips all solenoid plugs are removed. The last 2 (blue plugs) require unbolting of the 10mm keepers as shown. Pay attention to the orientation of the keepers as they will only fit one way. Install of harness and filter is opposite of removal, and also making sure the harness is free of pinching when reinstalling the filter. The last 2 pics show the broken collar on the main harness plug vs replacement harness.

I believe you have. Well if it's part of the a750 atsg PDF, then yes.

No progress yet. Still in the same condition. After I turned my ecu, my transmission seems to be acting normal. I'm in the middle of switching jobs and I'll be soon working 70hrs a week so not sure on when I'll get to this. Probably when it gets catastrophic.
