Would any AAL for a PreRunner or 4x4 Tacoma also work for the 5 Lug version? I have the ReadyLift 5-Lug Lift Kit but one of my AAL's got worn down. Any advice would be awesome.

    Chris,

Are you saying the FSM is wrong. It says the rear u-bolt torque is 50 N-m. 50 N-m converts to 37 ft-lbs. I'm confused, please clarify as I'm adding a leaf next weekend.

This is where I always check torque values and other unit conversions.
http://www.onlineconversion.com/torque.htm I've checked their numbers and they have always been right.

Yes. 73 ft-lbs is the correct figure.

    Chris,

I'm reluctant to disagree with you because you have been right on so many occasions, but where did you come up with that?
I just measured the dia. of the u-bolt (14mm) on my truck and checked a metric torque chart. Assuming Toyota uses standard strength steel in these u-bolts, 37 lb-ft(50N-m) is correct. I'm a Mechanical Engineer by education, with that said I know I'm not a expert on Toyota's, but I do know over torquing a bolt is bad. I need to know

I checked with about 5 or 6 Toyota mechanics. Also, I tried the 37# on my truck, and found the springs will shift horribly. I also asked a friend of mine who has been working on Toyotas for God only knows, and he said the value was wrong. Over torquing a bolt IS bad, and I understand your relectance. Every U bolt I have torqued has been to about 75#, with no issues. No crooked springs, etc. I HAVE E-mailed Toyota regarding this issue 2 seperate occasions, and have not heard back. I have given up at this point.

That's what I needed to hear. I know manuals are not always right. I suspect they are actually using a higher strength bolt, which needs a higher torque, but the manual writers are using the torque chart I used. It happens in my businesss too often. You da man. Thanks!!:thumbsup:

Does anybody know which leaf spring goes on which side? I bought a used pair of TSB leafs with aal since the dealer denied me for the tsb. I want to install them, but not sure which side they go on. I believe the springs were stamped with RH and LH after the part number. Does anyone know which spring goes on driver and passenger?

The one marked RH is the passenger side.

Great write up, just installed AAL's and shocks in the back and it is really nice to have pictures to go along with it. This is my first time taking anything apart on my truck and everything went smoothly, so far. Thanks Chris.

Don't know about second generation, but on my first generation the old u-bolts were more than long enough.

The stock U-bolts will work, at least on the 1st gens.
