Sounds like likes a lot of downside but no upside on the 285. Is there any advantage other than looks (for some) going to 285 ? I care more about the performance and functionality than appearance.

IMO, no. I'm not a huge off roader though, old logging roads and the beach is it for me. Maybe someone more serious about off roading can chime in but I don't think there's anything I couldn't do with smaller tires. I just like the look, guess I'm vain.

Don't burn me at the stake, but I'm starting to think 285's look kinda clumsy in some situations :anonymous:

Thanks Oz. So if you are into serious off road then the 285's. Sounds like a set of both might make sense for some. One set for normal use and another for off road.

After many hours of research and even more conversations with myself, I had to be honest about what it is I really do (at the moment) when i decided on which tire to go to. The never ending debate was between 285 vs 265. Since its my daily driver, i only have a 3" lift, I currently only do light wheeling and I tow at least once a month I had to go the with the wiser choice. Sure, the 285's look good, but are they necessary is the question I had to ask.

End result: 265/75/16 Duratracs. $675 shipped to my door.

    Loud as hell URD exhaust!
    ^^^ This.

Im running 275/70-R17 with 4.56 gears and my speedometer is only off by .5 mph at 60 mph.

I would not jump to 285's without regearing the differentials.

I get better mpg with my load E 33" 255s (18+) than I did with load C 265s (16+). They were different mfg and tread pattern though.

Edit: you'll be very happy with your new tires. Congrats!!!

    I have had both 265/75r16 KO2s and 285/75r16 KO2s on my truck.

I took a pretty big mpg hit going from the stock 265/70 to heavy 10 ply 265/75 tires. The mpg hit from 265/75 to 285/75 was pretty minimal actually. I'm around 15ish now... That is without adjusting for size. And with heavy wheels, bumper, and camper top.

With my 887 springs and Dakars in the back, the 265s just didn't quite fill out the wheel wells like I thought they should.

So I ended up selling the 265s and going with the 285s...

    265s -

I should say that with 33's I was not happy until I regeared to 4.56's.

The taller tires messed up the shift points. I found myself having to manually drop into 4th and then back to D to get the trans to shift into OD.

That, and towing I really noticed a drop in power prior to the 4.56's.

As far as gas mileage goes? Who knows? I've never tried to figure it out. I do know that I've done nothing to help it. My truck keeps getting taller and heavier... :D

Just bought 275/70r17 Cooper AT/3s in a C load. I'm hoping to strike the balance between the two.
