Tires and a carefully lighter foot is all that's required... but I don't know how most people who don't know that cope with the abs. Most people don't run out and replace tires on their brand new trucks...let alone a Toyota truck. I don't know how their chief engineer can just ignore this problem.

113 pages of this topic being beaten to death, but it doesn't mean there isn't an issue. I have a 2009 automatic TRD off road and have already been in one accident where I'm confident it could have been avoided were it not for the ABS, and just missed being in another one this morning. Conditions in both cases were wet roads and doing less than 10mph.

I've owned Tacoma trucks since 1988. Never had an issue coming to a stop in slick conditions. Also drove for a living for 15 years in all conditions, including ice and snow.
ABS kicks in at low speed and i suddenly can't stop in what otherwise would have been very controlled or controllable situations.
The only thing that saved me this morning was that I pumped the brakes. Totally counterintuitive to how ABS is supposed to work, as I understand it. a few months ago when i started to slide i mashed the brakes when I felt that traction was lost. Clearly I should have braked earlier, but that doesn't mean ABS should've locked the brakes. I even had time to put the vehicle in neutral while it was sliding to reduce forward force from the engine only to enjoy a slow motion collision with the car in front of me.

I know it can be disabled by popping the fuse, but I do want ABS in case it's needed at higher speeds. At low speeds it's useless at best and dangerous at worst.

I’m not gonna lie I didnt read all 113 pages so i’m sorry if this has been discussed already.
But would you just be able to replace the abs “computer” or whatever controls it with an updated one from a newer taco that works better?

I remember coming home one afternoon when a snow storm had hit in my 99 Tacoma. I helped those that i could and i also passed many many people in the ditch (who had help) and not one second did I lose faith in my Tacomas ability to perform on bad roads and weather. My 2005 Tacoma I love but is a down right joke on bad roads with the ABS kicking at any speed over 5 mph. I wouldn't let anyone I cared about drive this truck in bad weather and that's due to the ABS on this truck.

Just pull the fuse, add a switch or whatever you have to do to make your truck safe. I pulled the fuse on my truck the first winter I had it and never put it back.

Nope. I’d guess lots of police reports are wrote up though where people blame ABS for all sorts of things. I understand the complaints, but I have a hard time blaming ABS for accidents that are probably speed related.

It takes 10 minutes of work on your driveway to override the ABS with a simple switch. Once I installed the TruTrac in my truck I wanted to be able to kill ABS, VSC, and TRAC on the trail on command. I was floored how it’s just one wire and a switch to make it happen in the second gen. For all the time people spend whining in here they could easily shut the whole system down if they wanted. I turn mine off when I want to throw dirt around and leave it on while on the road.

Pull the fuse, or relay. Make a switch in the circuit.

BTW, my '97 E36 Bimmer has far superior ABS, than my '06 Taco.

My '01 and '10 Tacomas had/have great ABS brakes.
My 2005 did not! Very dangerous on wet or dirt roads.
I wonder what they did on some models to cause them not to work well?
I took my '05 to the dealer about this and all I got was the standard "that's the way ABS works" answer. So happy my 2010 brakes work great like my 2001 did.

My brakes have done similar things to me twice except the roads were damp, not even standing water or snow or ice. I almost blew through the intersection from a steep down hill. My abs light is on but randomly goes off, then randomly while I'm driving it reappears. No idea.

Brake fluid reservoir too low. Wheel speed sensor bad, or wiring. Bad wheel bearing (at that point though, it would be a catastrophic failure and undriveable.)
