ABS Scan Tool - OBDII Readers

Hi all,

I've got my 2003 Tacoma and a 1999 4Runner both with ABS lights on. I don't want to pay a shop $100+ for each vehicle to tell me what the ABS codes are one time. (Local parts stores i've found only pull basic codes, not ABS for free.)

I ordered a

$150 Foxwell NT630 Plus OBD2 Scanner with ABS and SRS, 2024 ABS Scan Tool Bleeding Brake SRS Scanner Car Code Reader Diagnostic Tool Bidirectional Scanner with Airbag Light Reset SAS Oil Light

Foxwell NT630 Plus but it only pulled Chrysler/Ford/GM ABS data even after updating so i sent it back.

I'm wonder what specific tool you're using in that $50-250 range that definitely pulls ABS codes from our older vehicles. I don't necessarily need the two-way bleeding functionality, i just need to know which wheel it's complaining about, or if it's the pump etc.

There is a way of finding ABS codes by jumping appropriate pins on OBD port.
If I can find it I'll post the PDF for FSM or a link.

I use a scanner that is marketed by Bosch but it's just an Actron CP9695 that's in blue plastic. You'll need the 9695 model to be able to pull ABS codes from a toyota of our vintage.. I think Amazon has em for around 280 bucks

 

I have a scangauge II on my dash, tells me any code and lets me clear it.

Yeah i had used the search function but still have trouble locating the actual steps. Lots of people just saying, "I jumped the pins." with no further explanation.

I called Actron and spoke with a tech rep about the C9680 and C9695. She verified the only difference between the two in regards to ABS data is the 'Datastream' functionality. Though beyond "it can read live data of what the system is doing" she was unable to provide more detail about what exactly it would pull (per-sensor voltage, pump actuation, etc.) Sounds like it could be nice, but the ~$150 increase in price between the two models doesn't seem worth it for me personally.

She was kind enough to check the supported vehicles for me as well. It looks like they'll both do ABS codes for my Tacoma but not - or more limited - reading of the 1999 4runner. I might pick up the C6980 as the base ABS functionality is enough for the Tacoma and some of our other early-2000 vehicles.

I also called ScanGauge and asked about the ABS code functionality, the rep stated it does not pull ABS Codes as the tool doesn't communicate on those pins. Its solely traditional diagnostic/Pxxxxx codes and sensors.
