    Hi all.

I recently picked up an AC Taco and I wanted to make the rear section as usable as possible. My first thought was to just yank out the rear seats because, c'mon, seriously? Useless.

Then I started using the folded rear seats for organizing and started to realize that I'd actually like to keep them "just in case". The folded up seats hold a pop-up organizer (folded up), my umbrella sits on top of the folded up seats and is held in place by the folded down head rests, and I have a Nite Ize Gear Line clipped between the two headrest posts which work well as grocery bag clips, which also happens to work well for tent or hammock camping.

I wanted a flat deck in the back so that my dog can have a place to relax on long rides. I found some Dewalt toolboxes that are the same height as the top of the under-seat storage compartments. I also found a safe that matches up in height when placed on the hump between the two tool boxes and is also a perfect width match. I removed the rear center console (useless other than holding the rear seat belt buckles from rattling around from never being used) and used the mounting plate to secure the safe to the floor. Then I covered the whole thing with a gym floor mat material that I cut down to fit the space.

I plan on making a 1/4" plywood plate to cover the trough that is now accessible from the removed rear center console.

I now have a completely flat 22" by 50" deck in the rear with a weatherproof floor material, storage compartments that can be removed or stacked and secured on each other, a 6 digit safe secured to the vehicle, and full use of the useless rear seats.

    Picture time:

    Flat deck:

Toolbox to OEM storage compartment height:

Folded seats with umbrella and Gear Line clips:

    Safe exposed for access:

    Containers without the mat:

What is the overall length of the two factory storage compartments end to end? I see that your deck is 50", did you extend beyond or is that flush with the compartment outer side? I really do wish that Toyota would offer the Utility Package on all the Access Cab trim levels, it makes no sense other than that they want to push out as many vehicles as possible before next year; the mid-size truck market will have more choices for buyers when Ford and Jeep jump into the field.

    @Cagedodger,

I like your mod. Looks very clean and useful.

Could you kindly tell me more about your tool box? Brand, model #, price etc.? I have AC with a utility package. I might use your idea.

You can skip the umbrella if you like.

I've had the toolboxes for a few years but best I can figure from a quick Google search they're DeWalt TSTAK DWST17807: Length: 17-1/4, Width: 6-1/2, Height: 13.

    The safe is a Sentry Safe QAP1E 0.08 cu.ft.

Thanks for the reply, the toolbox fits perfectly, I like that idea. It's best to have gear in a secure place for sure, I witnessed a rollover of a Nissan Pathfinder; the dude was a union contractor and his circular saw ripped right into his torso. After seeing that, all my stuff is secured from now on.

Hey those are pretty neat! I added a pair to my wish list.

Are the seats able to slide all the way back with the tool boxes on the floor??

Wow. Thanks so much for posting this. I just bought two of these and hot damn, its like they were mean to be there all along. I spray painted the orange side lever thingies flat black to make them a little less conspicuous. I have an OEM+ sub in the back and these two tool boxes fit perfectly next to it. The jumper seats fold down and cover the DEWALT logo and silver front latches. Looking in the back windows, you would never know they were there. I couldnt be happier!

I went thru pep boys with a crap magnet, got it all
I put my rear seats on (4) 3/8" "Ball Lock Pins". I can remove both seats in about a minute . The extra space comes in hand on cross country trips.
