I agree with the votes for the access cab, long bed. Leg room is the real issue in the back of the cab, and the double cab doesn't add much leg room, just a bigger butt pad. A double cab, long bed is a tight fit in most garages, and is more difficult to park in lots where you have to pull in between other vehicles. The bad news is you are stuck with an auto trans.

Sounds like you would be fine with the access cab. You could get the dcsb with tow package and get a bed extender that goes in your hitch. Good for canoe or lumber or anything else long.

A few additions to make me feel cool.
I purchased a brand new 07 access cab and promptly modded the hell out of it. A year later my first kid came along and I figured out that a car seat will not fit in the AC. It took a little time but I ended up back in a Tacoma, doing all the same work again but this time a double cab SB because you look like a fag in a DCLB. You never know when you will have a grandchild or will have a reason for that full size back seat. Oh yeah, buy a trailer. I haul whatever I want.

I live in a small condo and my dclb fits in the 'normal' garage with inches to spare.

Does fine in most parking spaces too, I backed it in next to a prius the other day... the overhang behind the rear wheels went in a bush (front of the space) but i didn't stick out much more than the prius (back of the space)

I dont go crawling or anything, but so far I've been able to follow my dad's wrangler on every trail... Worst thing that happened was a little dragging of my tow hitch. You just really have to choose your path wisely with a long wheelbase

I “ordered” mine exactly how I wanted and it only took like 8 weeks. It’s worth the wait to get exactly what you want!

Order is not the right word because you can’t “order” but rather it’s luck of the draw. Next one made in that configuration will be routed to you.

My vote is double cab long bed. Sounds like it suits your needs best. Shame it only comes in automatic but sounds like that’s what you want anyways.

Also, greetings from a fellow Eastern MA member!

It's possible to imagine scenarios where either might be better. Pick the one that either satisfies your most often needs or your most important needs. There is no best of both without any drawbacks. I have the AC and love it but I need the cargo space and was probably a hermit in a former life. Let somebody else drive the cab.

Rear seats are for people with kids to move around; get the Access Cab. Other option: find a used Regular Cab Tundra with a 6.5ft bed.

I'd probably tell you to get the access cab, but you mentioned doing stuff with your kids like camping and whatnot...... Are they going to ride in the back of the access cab?

That looks like a hot wheels toy.

I choose the DCSB myself as I take car of my elderly parents and occasionally have to take them out. Also to haul the kids to camp its perfect.

I just think the access cab version isn't functional enough for your or my situation.
As far as off roading, if you know how to drive in the slop u can make a longer wheelbase work.

If you are hauling more than 1 other person, double cab. I love my access cab though. works great for me.

I have the AC and on a windy day you can't hear the radio. I think all AC's are noisy cause there's no B-post.

My vote is ACLB...but could always augment the DCSB with a trailer, or both for that matter. I have a 5X8 open trailer for mine, which sits high enough for offroading too. It is like having a fullsize truck bed, without having to own a fullsize truck. Can tow quite a bit more weight than what the payload allows in either platform.

Nice thing about the AC is that you don't have the play the taxi driver game. ;)

One argument for the DC is the cab is going to be stiffer offroad than the AC, the cab flexes a bit in the AC causing the doors to squeak. For the DC who says you have to have seats back there, could always remove the seats and put storage drawers back there, guess the same could be said for the AC.
